We are seeking a passionate, energetic, and mission-driven Reforestation and Volunteers Officer to join our team based in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Position Overview
The Reforestation and Volunteers Officer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading reforestation initiatives that support the organization’s conservation and restoration goals throughout Puerto Rico. This role works closely with volunteers, communities, schools, corporations, and partner organizations to implement impactful tree-planting and environmental stewardship activities.
The selected candidate will coordinate volunteer recruitment efforts, oversee event logistics, maintain strategic partnerships, and support data collection and reporting related to reforestation projects. This position combines fieldwork, environmental education, volunteer engagement, and conservation science.
Availability to work rotating shifts, extended hours, weekends, holidays, and travel within and outside Puerto Rico is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate reforestation and habitat restoration activities across assigned regions.
- Recruit, coordinate, and guide volunteers participating in environmental conservation projects.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with communities, educational institutions, corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
- Assist in identifying, preparing, and managing reforestation sites.
- Collect seeds, monitor tree growth, conduct site assessments, and participate in tree planting activities.
- Gather, manage, analyze, and enter reforestation and volunteer program data.
- Support environmental education and volunteer engagement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, safety procedures, and environmental best practices.
- Prepare reports and maintain accurate records related to reforestation efforts and volunteer participation.
Key Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Education, Tourism, Environmental Studies, or a related field from an accredited university or college.
Experience
- 2–3 years of experience in a similar position, environmental programs, ecotourism, interpretation, volunteer management, or related areas.
- 2–3 years of experience in customer service, sales, public speaking, educational presentations, or community engagement.
- Experience conducting fieldwork, scientific investigations, nursery operations, tree propagation, or reforestation projects.
Technical Knowledge
- Experience using field and scientific equipment such as GPS devices, pH meters, and related monitoring tools.
- Knowledge of botany, agro ecological practices, tree production techniques, environmental management plans, and pesticide application is preferred.
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), map interpretation, and environmental data collection is preferred.
- Experience using field tools and equipment, including machetes, trimmers, and related conservation tools, is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet research, and digital data management.
- Knowledge of Mac OS and Outlook is preferred.
Additional Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.
- Valid Puerto Rico Driver’s License required.
- Category 4 Driver’s License or higher preferred.
- CPR, Emergency Management, Interpretive Guide, or related certifications preferred.
- Must be willing and able to work outdoors in diverse environments, including forests, mountains, coastal areas, and other natural settings.
- Availability to work rotating schedules, extended hours, weekends, holidays, and travel when necessary.
