Our Wetlands & Ecology Team and ProjectsOur Environmental Services team, composed of experienced professionals, provides comprehensive environmental permitting, planning, and compliance monitoring services across a range of projects. Our technical experts specialize in freshwater and coastal wetland delineations, environmental impact assessments, and wildlife evaluations. We lead initiatives in climate change resiliency, wetland and ecological restoration, dam removal, and streambank stabilization. Our work also includes rare species permitting, all aimed at ensuring sustainable development and environmental stewardship for our clients.
Responsibilities, Requirements, and Total Rewards
What You’ll Be Doing
As a valuable part of our Wetlands & Ecology team, an Environmental Scientist 2 will support a variety of projects and gain hands-on experience with responsibilities such as:
Perform wetland delineation fieldwork, natural resource surveys, habitat assessments, rare species observations, soil characterization, and plant species identification
Conduct construction environmental monitoring and support compliance inspections for active project sites
Prepare field notes, data summaries, technical reports, figures, and supporting documentation for environmental studies and permit applications
Assist with coastal and freshwater wetland permitting at the local, state, and federal level
Support the development of permit applications and regulatory filings, including coordination with project teams and technical reviewers
Participate in site walks, public hearings, and municipal commission meetings; present technical information with support from senior staff as appropriate
Coordinate with field teams, engineers, planners, and project managers to support efficient project execution
Apply working knowledge of wetland regulations, ecological field methods, and permitting processes to help solve project challenges
Travel to project sites as needed and work outdoors in a variety of weather and field conditions
What You'll Need
- 2+ years of experience in environmental consulting, ecological fieldwork, wetland permitting, regulatory work, or a similar field
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Biology, Soil Science, Ecology, Natural Resources, or another related natural sciences field
- Coursework or applied experience in ecology, hydrology, botany, soils, wetland science, or related technical areas
- Experience performing field data collection, wetland delineations, habitat assessments, environmental monitoring, or similar natural resource surveys
- Familiarity with coastal and freshwater wetland permitting processes
- Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear field documentation, report sections, and permit-support materials
- Strong verbal communication skills and comfort participating in client, project team, or regulatory discussions
- Resourceful, detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced consulting environment
- Willingness to work in physically challenging outdoor conditions, in all types of weather, and travel to project sites on an as-needed basis
- Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and access to transportation for field assignments
Preferred Requirements
- Experience conducting wetland delineations with increasing independence
- Experience supporting local wetlands filings, state wetland permitting, or federal permitting processes
- Working knowledge of regulations and agencies such as the Connecticut Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Act, Connecticut Tidal Wetlands Act, Clean Water Act Section 404/401 regulations, Construction Stormwater General Permit, state and federal endangered species compliance, or other state and local environmental review processes
- Experience with wetland functional assessments, stream functional assessments, wildlife habitat evaluations, or ecological restoration projects
- Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Soil Science, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a related field
- Progress toward or interest in certifications such as Associate Professional Soil Scientist, Certified Professional Soil Scientist, Professional Wetland Scientist, Certified Wildlife Biologist, Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control, or other stormwater/environmental inspector certifications
- Prior environmental consulting or regulatory agency experience
- Prior experience with infrastructure construction projects
