Position: Maintenance Technician

POSITION OVERVIEW
Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, the Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 900 animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, rhinoceros and various other animal encounters.
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the inspection, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and general repair of the Zoo. Perform assignments related to the upkeep of any Zoo buildings, grounds, property, and animal habitats in a timely and efficient manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
- Operating knowledge of power tools and safety related equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and make repairs that may include electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
- Manual dexterity to use several types of power tools.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions; may need work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work safely with ladders and work at heights.
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Good balance is required.
- Must work well with others.
PREFERRED/DESIRED:
- One year of facilities or maintenance experience is preferred.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
- Ability to follow directions, make logical decisions, and function as a team player.
- Perform general facilities duties including, but not limited to, carpentry, drywall, masonry, electrical work, plumbing, and basic HVAC.
- Safely operate battery and electric power tools.
- Assist all zoo departments with departmental repairs or maintenance related initiatives; this may include construction, horticulture, and animal departments.
- Complete maintenance on animal habitats and support facilities while being able to follow all the rules regarding the animal safety and their habitats.
- Partner with outside contractors and volunteer groups on assigned projects.
- Assist with the setup of special events. May need to work with vendors.
- Receive and input work order information into a computer and cell phone.
- Flexibility with Monday through Friday work hours; also, must be on call during specified weekends.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
(M) Medium Work
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects as needed to move objects.
POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:
Indoor and outdoor office environment with frequent movement outdoors. Exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity.
WORK SCHEDULE:
May be required to work weekends and nights as necessary.
TRAVEL:
Infrequent travel in-county only.
