Director of Finance
Role Overview
A rapidly growing renewable energy company is seeking a Director of Finance to support the expansion of its renewable energy portfolio across North America.
This role is highly strategic and execution-focused, responsible for overseeing corporate finance, project finance, financial modeling, reporting, budgeting, and capital planning across utility-scale renewable energy projects, including solar, BESS, wind, and hybrid infrastructure.
The successful candidate will work closely with executive leadership, investors, lenders, and project development teams to ensure financial discipline, bankability, and efficient capital deployment across the portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
1. Corporate Finance & Financial Strategy
- Lead financial planning and corporate budgeting activities across Canadian operations.
- Develop and maintain corporate financial models and forecasts.
- Support executive leadership with strategic financial analysis and decision-making.
- Manage cash flow planning and capital allocation strategies.
- Assist in establishing scalable financial systems, controls, and reporting frameworks.
2. Project Finance & Capital Structuring
- Lead financial analysis and structuring of utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Support:
- Debt financing processes
- Equity structuring
- Tax equity and investment structures
- Construction and long-term financing negotiations
- Coordinate with lenders, investors, financial advisors, and legal counsel during financing processes.
- Manage financial due diligence requirements for acquisitions and financing.
3. Financial Modeling & Investment Analysis
- Build and maintain detailed project financial models for:
- Solar
- BESS
- Wind
- Hybrid generation projects
- Perform:
- IRR and NPV analysis
- Sensitivity analysis
- Merchant exposure analysis
- PPA valuation analysis
- Curtailment and pricing scenario analysis
- Evaluate acquisition opportunities and investment returns.
4. Accounting, Reporting & Compliance
- Oversee accounting and financial reporting functions.
- Ensure compliance with:
- Canadian accounting standards
- Tax regulations
- Corporate governance requirements
- Coordinate with external auditors, accountants, and tax advisors.
- Manage:
- Monthly and annual reporting
- Financial statements
- Tax filings
- GST and payroll compliance
5. Project Development & Commercial Support
- Work closely with development and engineering teams to:
- Evaluate project economics
- Optimize project configurations
- Support EPC and procurement decisions
- Assist commercial teams with:
- PPA pricing analysis
- Bid strategy
- Commercial negotiations
- Support M&A activities and acquisition financial reviews.
6. Risk Management & Internal Controls
- Establish and maintain financial controls and approval processes.
- Monitor:
- Project financial risks
- Counterparty risks
- Market exposure
- Liquidity requirements
- Develop mitigation strategies for financial and operational risks.
7. Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Act as a key financial advisor to executive leadership.
- Work closely with:
- Development
- Engineering / EPC
- Legal
- Asset Management
- External investors and lenders
- Support the growth and structuring of the North American platform.
Candidate Profile
Qualifications
- CPA designation preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field.
- Minimum 7–10+ years of experience in:
- Renewable energy
- Infrastructure
- Project finance
- Investment analysis
- Corporate finance
Technical Expertise
- Strong experience in:
- Project finance
- Renewable energy financial modeling
- Debt and equity structuring
- Financial forecasting and reporting
- Deep understanding of utility-scale solar, wind, and/or BESS projects.
- Advanced Excel financial modeling capabilities required.
