PURPOSE
This GIS Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. The Division of Science and Resource Management at Grand Teton National Park has launched a new ‘Spatial Strategy’, which is a concerted effort to increase the explicit incorporation of existing spatial data about the Park's natural resources into park management activities and planning. There exists a large body of data and information pertaining to Grand Teton’s natural resources that represents large previous investments. However, much of the data are not fully utilized and do not inform management as much as they could. Making existing data more readily usable and incorporated into the park’s management and decision-making process will be a cost-effective way to improve Grand Teton National Park staff’s ability to balance the park’ multi-faceted demands. A biologist position has been created to manage this effort, and the Spatial Strategy has been identified as a key action for Grand Teton National Park in the coming years. The Scientist in Parks position will help progress this important effort at a pivotal time in the project’s lifespan.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
This SIP position will collaborate closely with year-round staff in Grand Teton's Science and Resource Management Division to conduct QA/QC on natural resource datasets, conduct basic spatial analyses, and produce spatial data products using datasets pertaining to Grand Teton’s natural resources. This project will contribute to a multi-year project at Grand Teton National Park to increase the usability and utility of existing spatial data about the park’s natural resources. Data management will be a core job duty, but there will be intentional effort to provide opportunities for spatial analyses that address questions relevant to park management so that the SIP experiences the complete process of acquiring, managing, analyzing, and applying data for natural resource management. There are a variety of spatial data management and analysis needs associated with this effort and specific tasks and projects can be tailored to the SIP's interests and skills. There will be opportunities for occasional field projects to help the SIP experience the park and better understand the natural resources associated with the datasets they are collaborating with.
DELIVERABLES
