The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent nonprofit research organization dedicated to providing first-rate, unbiased research and technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. Our mission is to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of road, marine, and air transportation.
The ICCT Communications team works closely with researchers around the world to translate technical analysis into clear, accessible products for policymakers, journalists, and the public. These include reports, briefs, fact sheets, digital products, videos, and visual assets that communicate complex information in compelling ways.
The ICCT is seeking a Communications Specialist, Design to design and support the production of ICCT publications and visual communications products. This position plays a central role in shaping how ICCT research is communicated, leading the translation of technical research into compelling data visualizations, digital-native publications, and social media content, and supporting the layout and design of reports, briefs, and other print and digital materials to ensure clarity, accessibility, and visual impact for global audiences.
This is a full-time position based in São Paulo and will report to the Senior Communications Specialist, Art Direction.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate complex technical information into clear, engaging visual and digital formats including charts, infographics, social media visuals and rapid response visual assets.
- Collaborate with researchers, communications staff, and editors to develop digital-native publication formats (interactive web pages, scrollytelling, data dashboards) that go beyond the traditional PDF.
- Ensure visual materials align with ICCT brand guidelines and maintain a consistent visual identity across publications and communications products.
- Design and produce publications (reports, briefs, fact sheets), power point presentations, website graphics, large-scale event graphics, and platform-specific social media graphics.
- Manage multiple design projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Apply design expertise to strengthen the ICCT’s visual and brand standards, including developing and maintaining templates for recurring formats.
- Provide design guidance and consultation to project teams on visual communications strategies.
- Support the development of new visual templates and design systems.
- Help train colleagues onbest practices and the effective use of visual communication tools.
Required Qualifications
- Strong portfolio demonstrating data visualization, visual storytelling, typography, color theory, branding, and publication layout design.
- 3–5 years of professional graphic design or publication design experience, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
- Proficiency with at least one dedicated data visualization tool (e.g., Datawrapper, Flourish, Tableau, or comparable) and demonstrated ability to produce publication-quality charts from researcher-supplied data.
- Experience working collaboratively with subject-matter experts to develop visual communications products.
- Ability to manage design projects independently from concept to final production.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in graphic design, data visualization, visual communications, or information design — or equivalent professional experience demonstrated through a substantive portfolio.
- Experience creating charts, infographics, and data visualizations.
- Experience designing policy reports, research publications, or other technical communications products.
- Experience working in research or policy-focused organizations.
- Fluency in English required; Portuguese proficiency is strongly preferred.
