Summary
What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The government-wide direct hire authority for Chemist. GS-1320-12 is being used to fill this position. Salary: $101.375 (Step 01) to $131,790 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
Major Duties
As a Chemist within the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Make chemical observations, calculations, risk assessments, and analyses. Collects, manages, disseminates, and archives scientific information. Make geological observations, computations, measurements, and contribute to interpretations. Prepare or lead technically authoritative reports and deliver presentations. Communicate a broad range of information regarding chemical and geological data to colleagues, collaborators, partners, and the general public. Physical Demands The work is conducted in several types of environments including a typical office; warehouse where incumbent is subjected to long periods of standing, stooping, lifting heavy items, and reaching; laboratory with possible exposure to hazardous chemicals; outside staging areas from docks to beaches and wetlands; and aboard research vessels (from skiffs to deep ocean vessels). The work requires good health, strength, balance, coordination, and ability to work long hours, sometimes under harsh weather and sea conditions. Work Environment Most work is accomplished in an office, laboratory, warehouse, sea-going research vessel, or nearshore beach or wetland environment. As much as three months of each year may be spent on board a research vessel or in the field in an environment of extreme noise, fumes, and exposure to harsh weather and sea conditions.
