Major Duties
This position is located in Denali National Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division. The typical season for this position is May - September, but varies during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, and/or funding. Selectees may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Operate a variety of motor vehicles, including those having a GVWR of more than 32,000 pounds and towing trailers with a GVWR of greater than 10,000 pounds. Operate vehicles on steep grades, winding roads, and varied mountainous terrain. Vehicles primarily include tractor trailers and dump trucks (some with dual transmissions), operated within close tolerances, driving and backing over uneven ground and in narrow or congested areas and between buildings and other vehicles. Occasionally perform general laborer duties such as washing vehicles and equipment; cleaning with push brooms, wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes; loading and unloading supplies by hand or with forklifts or loader; operating chainsaws; and repairing road shoulders and ditches by hand. Pass onto other workers the instructions received from supervisors and assigns immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led; report to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of work delays; demonstrate proper work methods, seeing to it that needed plans, materials, and tools are available; check work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Positions may require living and working out of a remote road camp for several days at a time. Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools. Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Government housing may be available.
