Employment Type: Canada Summer Jobs Program - Summer Position (35-40 hours per week)
Hours: Monday to Friday, with flexibility for evenings & weekend coverage as required
Rate of Pay: $18.65 per hour
Job Title:
This student will support the Guest Empowerment Coordinator with the daily Guest programing of the expanded community garden, which supplies fresh produce and therapeutic outdoor engagement opportunities, while also assisting with basic bicycle repairs that directly reduce barriers to transportation for vulnerable individuals. The goal is to empower Guests with skill development, confidence, and mental well-being. This position helps enhance our outdoor spaces and provides meaningful, practical support to the Guests we serve.
Key Responsibilities
Guest Empowerment
- Engage with Guests in a respectful, trauma-informed, and inclusive manner.
- Focus on the skill-development, training, and teaching of Guests.
- Communicate supply needs, safety issues, or maintenance concerns to the the supervisor.
- Follow all organizational and workplace safety procedures.
- Participate in staff orientation, training, and team check-ins.
Garden Support
- Assist with planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and general maintenance of garden beds.
- Help care for flowers, vegetables, herbs, and landscaped areas.
- Maintain garden tools and equipment and keep outdoor spaces tidy and safe.
- Support harvesting activities and garden-related programming as needed.
Bike Repair Support
- Work with team to perform basic bicycle repairs, including fixing flat tires, adjusting brakes, oiling chains, and minor tune-ups.
- Keep the bike repair area clean, organized, and well-stocked with tools and supplies.
- Help track repairs, parts used, and bicycle inventory.
- Provide simple bike maintenance tips to Guests when appropriate.
Qualifications
- Must meet Canada Summer Jobs requirements, plus organizational requirements:
- Be 20 to 30 years old at the start of employment.
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Genuine passion to work with a vulnerable population.
- Interest or experience in gardening, landscaping, or outdoor work.
- Basic mechanical or bicycle repair skills, or willing to learn (formal or informal).
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to safely perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and carrying.
Assets (But Not Required)
- Previous experience in a non-profit, community, or Guest-support environment.
- Experience with general gardening and vegetable growing.
- Experience with bike safety or maintenance.
