The Opportunity
We are seeking one (1) Specialized General Labourer Seasonal – Pest Control who will be employed based on seasonal demands and is subject to layoff at the end of the season. The Seasonal Specialized Labourer – Pest Control is responsible for routine duties to assist in the day-to-day control of pest species within the Assiniboine Park & Zoo including The Leaf. This position will be under the direct supervision of the Head of Pest Management Professional/Director of Animal Health & Nutrition. The incumbent will assist with the implementation of an integrated pest management strategy.
Responsibilities
- Support the delivery and/or execution of routine pest management activities across all Assiniboine Park Conservancy properties, including park grounds, buildings, Zoo, The Leaf, visitor areas, food service areas, and storage spaces.
- Support and assist with basic surveillance for signs of pest activity (e.g., rodents, insects, birds, wildlife) and report observations promptly to the Head Pest Management Professional.
- Under the direction of the Head Pest Management Professional, check, reset, clean, and replace traps and monitoring devices as assigned, following established procedures and training.
- Support pest prevention through routine sanitation and housekeeping duties, including garbage removal, debris cleanâup, and maintaining clean and orderly work and storage areas.
- Assist with ensuring food, feed, and supplies are properly stored in assigned areas to reduce pest attractants.
- Perform general labour tasks that contribute to pest mitigation, such as sweeping, light grounds cleanâup, and removal of vegetation debris.
- Assist with the setâup and takeâdown of pest management activities, including preparing work areas, moving materials, and placing signage or barriers as directed.
- Transport and distribute pest management supplies, tools, and materials throughout the Park under the direction of the Head Pest Management Professional or Management.
- Provide nonâtechnical, taskâbased support to the Head Pest Management Professional and other departments, under direction.
- Maintain pest management workspaces and storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe.
- Complete basic records and checklists related to assigned duties (e.g., trap checks, area inspections, sanitation tasks).
- Communicate completed tasks, observations, and concerns to the Head Pest Management Professional or supervisor to support recordâkeeping and followâup.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- A high school diploma and/or GED equivalent.
- Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
- A minimum of 2 years performing general labour and operational experience.
- Previous experience working in teams and dealing with both internal and external customers.
- Experience working in the Pest Management Field is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of practices of pest management in food preparation and other applications, handling and storage of chemicals, government regulations pertaining to these activities and associated safety hazards is considered an asset.
- Basic technology and computer skills.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Physically demanding and repetitive tasks.
- Must be able to perform physically strenuous work outdoors/indoors in all types of weather.
- Combination of sitting, standing, pushing, lifting, kneeling and walking for extended periods.
- Frequently handling heavy loads of up to 45-50 lbs.
- Must be able to push/pull 50-250 lbs.
- Noise exposure from operations, mechanical equipment and animal vocalizations.
- Exposure to strong scents from animals and chemical products.
- Contact with plants and animals which may cause allergic reactions.
- Occasional contact with fertilizers and pesticides, fuel, oil and grease, and animal feces.
