Job Description
Sarah Lawrence College Visual Arts Department invites applications for a one-year guest appointment with possible renewal for additional two years. The position is for a half-time (2-day) guest faculty to teach an introductory Sustainable Architecture or Environmental Design Studio, beginning fall of 2026. This guest faculty would teach one five-hour studio class each semester and one two credit ‘concept’ or sidebar class per year. The studio class has a maximum of fifteen students per semester. In addition to regular coursework, each of those students will complete a significant independent project or student ‘conference’ work, a hallmark of Sarah Lawrence’s educational system. The two-credit concept course has a maximum of twenty students, but no conference work. Environmental Design is inherently interdisciplinary. Students are liberal arts candidates and may have varying experience in design. The department will look for candidates who support an interdisciplinary philosophy, can engage students with emerging issues in the field, seek possible connections with some current digital technologies such as parametrics, interaction design, modeling, and plotting. Candidates should encourage strong representational skills (both analog and digital), lead students to consider design problems posed by a broad range of built environments, be open to leading community-based projects, and be able to merge cultural considerations with sustainable systems. Application materials must include: cover letter, CV, online link to portfolio containing ten to twenty examples of recent work, three contact references who will be contacted for letters of recommendation upon the submission of the candidate’s application. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. This is an in-person teaching appointment, with the expectation that the appointed individual will teach on campus for the duration of the contract period. Compensation for this position is a per-course rate based on experience.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have at least one year of teaching experience with undergraduates or its equivalent.
