Summary
You will perform various "generalist' duties" as a Park Ranger to facilitate visitor understanding and enjoyment of park resources, collect park fees, facilitate and induce visitor behavior consistent with resource protection and to gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for safe use of park. Open to the first 50 applicants or until 04/10/2026 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.
Major Duties
The incumbent provides front line information for visitors in the daily operation of the park. Greets visitors, provides basic orientation to the site and local area, provides safety messages, responds to questions in person, operates park radios and assists with trip planning. The incumbent may be responsible for hiking trails, patrolling parking lots and trails to make informal visitor contacts and monitor compliance with park regulations. Informs visitors about safety and hazards of the park, and monitors groups for permit violations. Informs visitors about the life, habits and behavior of Park fauna, with emphasis on behavior that may be potentially dangerous to visitors. Checks on the measures campers and hikers take to avoid attracting or provoking dangerous animals. Educates visitors regarding activities that impact upon the preservation of natural and cultural resources, including issues dealing with visitor safety. Performs various administrative duties, e.g. gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, etc. May issue field permits for camping and educates visitors regarding the requirements for backcountry hiking and camping, the reasons for the regulations, etc. As assigned, performs minor maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, housekeeping chores, grounds clean-up, cleaning outhouses, trail maintenance, fence monitoring and repair, spring monitoring and maintenance, updating bulletin boards, and exhibit repairs. You may be expected to perform some duties via kayaking and/or assist as a deckhand on an 18' to 26' powerboat. For more information about the park please visit: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
