Position Title: Project Engineer
Department: Engineering

Position Summary
The Project Engineer is a key member of a cross-functional team responsible for delivering battery energy storage projects in Japan using advanced, market-leading technologies. This role leads all engineering activities for two to three projects, from initial design through commissioning, to ensure safe, timely, and successful execution. The Project Engineer is expected to spend more than 50% of their time at project sites.
Key Responsibilities
· Support the development of technical specifications, vendor evaluations, and supplier qualification processes, including testing and commissioning requirements for energy storage projects.
· Assist procurement activities by coordinating supplier data collection, preparing technical requirement documentation, and maintaining supplier Q&A records.
· Manage engineering consultants or EPC contractors conducting grid interconnection studies in compliance with Japanese utility requirements, relevant regulatory authorities, and applicable grid codes.
· Evaluate technical components of EPC proposals related to energy storage systems during the contractor selection process.
· Review project documentation and preliminary designs to identify scope gaps and responsibility overlaps, ensuring overall project success through a strong understanding of engineering, construction, and permitting principles.
· Lead technical project execution by managing scope, schedules, and stakeholder coordination to maintain alignment across all parties.
· Collaborate closely with internal teams (project management, product engineering, sales) and external stakeholders (utilities, authorities having jurisdiction, contractors, and end customers) to ensure consistent and effective communication.
· Oversee engineering consultants and facilitate weekly coordination and design review meetings.
· Review and coordinate technical designs and documentation from suppliers and contractors.
· Manage the design review process and ensure timely resolution of all technical comments.
· Conduct site inspections and resolve technical issues during installation and commissioning phases.
· Recommend product or process improvements based on project experience and lessons learned.
Additional Responsibilities
· Build and maintain strategic relationships with key vendors, suppliers, and contractors within the energy storage industry in Japan.
· Contribute to value engineering initiatives and continuous process improvement by sharing project-specific insights.
Qualifications and Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
· 5–10 years of relevant experience in project or systems engineering within energy storage integrators or EPC organizations.
· Hands-on experience with battery energy storage systems, medium-voltage substations, or related technologies.
· Strong expertise in developing technical specifications, performing bid evaluations, and procuring major electrical equipment such as inverters, transformers, and switchgear.
· Solid knowledge of commissioning and testing procedures for energy storage projects.
· Proficiency in construction project management processes, including submittals, RFIs, change orders, non-conformance reports, and as-built documentation.
· Advanced technical knowledge of medium-voltage electrical installations, ampacity calculations, short-circuit and load-flow studies, protective device coordination, arc-flash analysis, and grounding design in accordance with international standards (e.g., IEEE).
· Working knowledge of Japanese grid regulations and utility interconnection requirements.
· Experience coordinating with local utilities and regulatory authorities.
· International mindset with experience working in multicultural, multinational environments.
