Summary
These are temporary positions at Shenandoah National Park with the Buildings, Utilities and Sanitation Branch. These positions perform simple and routine work involved in the cleaning and maintenance and repair of buildings and related utilities. Requires experience in trade work such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, etc. ***This announcement has an early cut-off date (see Duties section for more information).
Major Duties
Initial Cut-off Date: This is an open continuous announcement in which applications are collected over several months and have multiple cut-off dates. Applications will be considered throughout the open period of the announcement. ** The first cut-off date for early referral is February 7, 2026. ** Referral certificates will be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificate and/or additional vacancies need to be filled. These positions are assigned to the Buildings, Utilities & Sanitation Unit, Division of Facilities Management at Shenandoah National Park. The primary duties of the position involve multiple trades and crafts including sanitation, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical. Duties include: Clean, sanitize, and restock supplies for comfort stations, public restrooms, vault toilets, and visitor centers. Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities. Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work. Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures, which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles. Collects trash. Perform routine maintenance on campground sites and fire pits using hand tools. Operate light trucks to pick up and transport supplies and materials to and from work sites. These positions will be duty stationed at either Park Headquarters Maintenance Area near Luray, VA or Big Meadows Maintenance Area near mile-marker 51 on Skyline Drive. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.
