Position Summary
Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a Senior Manager, Environmental Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) Leader for our Carlsbad, California campus. This multi-building site supports manufacturing, distribution, R&D, laboratory, and office operations with approximately 1,300 employees. In this leadership role, you will drive the execution of Thermo Fisher’s global EHS strategy at the site level, ensuring regulatory compliance, continuous improvement, operational excellence, and a strong safety-first culture. You will develop and implement comprehensive EHS&S programs that proactively manage risk, reduce environmental impact, and protect employees, communities, and the environment — while enabling innovative scientific work that transforms lives.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
Lead and oversee all Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability programs across manufacturing, laboratory, distribution, and office environments.
Develop and execute site-level EHS&S strategy aligned with global standards and regulatory requirements.
Build, reinforce, and sustain a strong safety-first culture through active engagement with site leadership and operational teams.
Guide organizational change and drive accountability at all levels.
Direct and manage internal and external resources to achieve site and global objectives.
Manage site EHS budget and identify cost optimization opportunities.
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, Cal-OSHA, EPA, GMP, etc.) and Thermo Fisher standards.
Serve as the primary technical expert for site EHS matters.
Provide Incident Command leadership during site emergencies and coordinate emergency preparedness and response activities.
Manage hazardous materials and waste programs.
Lead in EHS regulatory inspections, audits, and agency interactions; oversight for preparation of responses and actions pre- and post- audits/inspections.
Interface with Global EHS teams and regulatory agencies to maintain collaborative compliance partnerships.
Continuous Improvement & Sustainability
Utilize Lean principles (Kaizen, Gemba, Six Sigma, PPI) to drive continuous improvement in safety performance and environmental impact reduction.
Systematically reduce site hazards and environmental footprint (energy, water, waste hazardous and non-hazardous).
Implement and continuously improve ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 aligned management systems.
Develop and enhance EHS programs to meet evolving business needs.
Manage key performance indicator (KPI) metrics, conduct data analysis, and translate insights into actionable improvements.
Training & Technical Expertise
Develop and deliver EHS training programs to ensure employees maintain the highest safety standards.
Provide technical guidance to address chemical, biological, physical, and radioactive hazards.
Support GMP, laboratory, biotechnology manufacturing, and R&D environments with strong technical acumen.
Qualifications
Advanced Degree plus 6+ years of EHS experience in regulated industries, OR Bachelor’s Degree plus 8+ years of EHS experience in regulated industries
Minimum 5 years of leadership/management experience (including direct staff management)
Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, OSHA/Cal-OSHA standards, EPA requirements, and EHS management systems
Demonstrated success developing and implementing EHS programs and training initiatives
Experience managing hazardous materials/waste programs and emergency response systems
Proficient in inspiring and coaching experienced team memberswhile willing toroll-upownsleeves tocontribute
Strong project management, data analysis, and continuous improvement skills; experienceusing lean problem-solving tools (Kaizen, Six Sigma,PPIetc.)
Ability to influence change across a highly matrixed organization
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency with EHS software systems and Microsoft Office applications
Ability to respond to emergencies and wear appropriate protective equipment
Travel up to 20% may be required
Working Conditions
This role includes office-based work (computer use, meetings, reporting) as well as time spent in laboratories, manufacturing, and distribution environments. Responsibilities include walking/standing during inspections, audits, emergency drills, and incident response activities.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $130,000.00 - $170,000.00.
This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
