The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000-square-mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories, and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators, 152 miles of intercepting sewers, 96 pumping systems, 3 CSO storage facilities, and 3 aeration facilities.
The selected candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:
1. Assist Bureau EHS staff in providing safety and environmental compliance support to BWT operations.
2. Assist in the preparation and distribution of BWT EHS communication documents and training materials.
3. Assist Bureau EHS staff with coordinating EHS audit programs, assessments, investigations, report preparation, and metrics.
4. Conduct research on various EHS regulations and best management practices and propose BWT EHS program improvements.
5. Assist in expanding the BWT EHS Technical Document Library on the DEP BWT SharePoint site.
6. Assist with routine and non-routine EHS Directorate workflows and tasks, including but not limited to reviewing and revising asbestos assessment records, updating facility maps, templating various EHS reports, and codifying data visualization.
In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.
