POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, the Animal Shows Speaker provides interpretive chats and performances in both scripted and unscripted experiences for audiences. This position engages guests throughout the Zoo and facilitates safe, fun experiences.
This position is ideal for performers and educators, as it requires effective communication skills. The Animal Shows Speaker must be able to improvise during presentations based on crowd feedback and/or animal behavior, focus on guest experience, and be able to interact with Zoo & Aquarium visitors under all circumstances. This position may also have the possibility of expanding duties to include animal handling.

Provides production assistance and performs in scripted indoor and outdoor experiences/encounters (i.e., running music, speaking at shows, etc.).

Assists with the daily care of the animal collection on the Ambassador Animals Team.

Enhances the guest experience by initiating conversations, answering questions, and educating the public.

Assists in the development and enhancement of presentations and experiences, including:
- Resource gathering and maintenance.
- Script writing/editing.
- Working to consistently improve knowledge of interpretation techniques and conservation education content.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
- Some college or experience in science, education, theatre/performing arts, and/or interpretation desired, but not required.
- EXPERIENCE:
- Strong public speaking and interactive communication skills with a variety of audiences.
- Interpretation, theatre, or other informal education experience desired.
- Strong written and computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Foreign language and/or American Sign Language skills are a plus.
- OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid driver’s license preferred.
- Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
- Must be able to lift 40-50 pounds and have sufficient mobility to ensure a safe work environment.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
- Must pass a background and drug screening.
