DescriptionOur Substation group is currently looking to add a Commercial Manager to our growing team, based in Calgary, AB.
Reporting to the Vice President of Substations and Renewables, we are seeking a skilled professional with in-depth experience in commercial contract management, negotiations, project controls, and risk. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in managing the contractual and financial aspects of our construction projects, ensuring profitability, compliance, and risk mitigation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support contract lifecycle, from tendering to execution, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry standards
- Work closely with estimating, project management, legal, finance, and operations teams to drive commercial success
- Draft, review, interpret and negotiate contracts with clients, subcontractors, and vendors to safeguard the company’s interests
- Identify potential risks in contracts and projects (including financial, legal, and operational risks), developing mitigation strategies to minimize impacts
- Ensure Change Management protocols are established during execution and supported throughout the contract
- Support project team with validation of incoming change requests and subcontractor notices, where required
- Provide risk management support related to forecasting, scheduling, and performance evaluation
- Conduct financial evaluations of projects, analyzing budgets, forecasts, and cash flows to optimize profitability
- Utilize analytics to assess financial data, track project performance, and enhance business insights for informed decision-making
- Lead claims and disputes activities, ensuring fair outcomes and minimizing financial exposure
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and competitive dynamics
- Travel to conferences, tradeshows and internal / external stakeholder meetings as needed
Requirements- Post-Secondary Education in a related field (i.e. engineering, business administration, finance, law, construction management, etc.)
- 5 years’ experience in commercial or contract management, preferably in the construction industry
- Working knowledge of contract law and standard industry contracts (e.g., lump sum, unit rate, EPC)
- Strong financial acumen, with proficiency in budgeting, forecasting, and cost management
- Experience with project analytics, including dashboard creation, reporting, and data visualization for financial and operational insights
- Proven negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Demonstrated competence in relevant software such as Microsoft Office, contract management systems, and financial analysis tools
Preferred Skills / Qualifications
- Commercial and project controls experience in large-scale commercial or infrastructure projects
- Experience with Salesforce Analytics
- Familiarity with construction procurement and subcontractor management
- Experience in transmission line construction
