Program: Division of Science & Research
Program Description: The function of the DSR is to help ensure that the Department’s decision-making is based upon the best possible scientific and technical information. The role of this Division is to provide the Department with, and access to, expertise and information that supports its technical and policy needs. In addition, the Division performs research to meet the information and problem-solving needs, identifies and understands emerging issues that require the Department’s attention and advocates/integrates the multi-disciplinary perspective into the Department’s identification, analysis, and resolution of environmental issues.Project Description: The Wetlands Science & GIS Intern will support the DSR wetlands team in conducting field work, data entry, and website content. The internship will focus on both freshwater and coastal wetland systems, helping the wetland team conduct annual monitoring tasks. Additionally, part of the internship will involve creating an accessible ArcGIS StoryMap (or using an analogous platform) to highlight wetland land cover and the ecosystem benefits wetlands provide across the state in an easily accessible and understandable format. The intern may also assist with lake sediment coring, subsampling core intervals for core chronology, diatom analyses, organic pollutants and preparing diatom slides.Specific to the Position: Suitable candidates should have a basic knowledge of biological/ecological science, familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, have experience using ArcGIS and/or designing storymaps, and the ability to spend time outdoors in hot, buggy, and muddy conditions. An understanding of common statistical methods is preferred.
Preferred Area of Study: Seeking individuals enrolled at an accredited university/college studying one of the Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences; or in Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Bio-resource Engineering.
License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
