Will Consider Attorney III
The Caltrans Sacramento Legal Office is looking for a well-qualified and highly motivated attorneys with experience and/or interest in civil litigation. The candidates will join our office with primary focus on defending Caltrans in tort and/or employment cases. Trial experience is preferred but not required.
As an employee of the State of California, the total compensation and benefits are excellent. This includes holidays, vacation and sick leave (or annual leave), health, dental, vision and pension benefits.
Telework may be available, but attorneys are expected to report to the office in Sacramento and appear at depositions, court hearing, etc. throughout the State.
New to State candidates will be hired at the starting salary of the classification. Based on additional qualifying experience Attorney classifications qualify for a “Hire Above Minimum” (HAM) 5% salary adjustment.
Attorneys may receive promotions in place based on available funds, successful performance, and compliance with labor union requirements.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Attorney IV / Attorney III exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements
- The positions require a CA BAR membership License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
- Applicants are required to take the CalHR examination for the classification and be reachable on the eligibility list.

Caltrans Legal Division is a full-service law office - our attorneys represent Caltrans in State and Federal courts in all phases of litigation and trial work and advise and assist Caltrans in all facets of its operations. Experience with civil litigation, including legal research, law and motion, discovery, and trial is preferred.
Caltrans Sacramento Legal Office is one of five offices comprising the Caltrans Legal Division (Sacramento/HQ, Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego and Fresno). All five offices work together as one Caltrans legal Division. We have statewide committees with members from each office to facilitate information sharing and networking. We also have statewide legal workshops to provide opportunities for all our attorneys to develop statewide relationships and learn about the Legal Division's areas of practice.
