Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management, this position is responsible for managing the Company’s insurance claims across multiple lines of coverage, including workers’ compensation, auto, property, general liability, and other programs. The role works closely with the Chief Legal and Risk Officer, Senior Litigation Counsel, Finance Department, and other Company leaders. This individual will be a key contributor to the Company’s Legal & Risk team.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for the claim management across all lines of business with primary focus on casualty program
- Avg 250 claims a year and about $5+M of accrued value across multiple states nationally
- Manage and direct third-party administrators/carriers with goal of cost control, proper medical and disability management, and timely resolution of claims
- Monitor reserves and allocated expenses from inception of claim to conclusion for adequacy and analysis for senior management
- Manage first party physical damage claims and work directly with third party carriers to ensure timely reimbursement for damages
- Manage third-party risk service providers, such as TPAs, Nurse Triage, etc.
- Partner with General Managers and Safety Director to ensure the Return-to-Work Program is maximized and guidelines are followed to lower costs and keep employees at work
- Coordinate with Director of Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management, Company Controller, and outside actuary for setting of proper Company reserves
- Communicate with field leadership on claims and provide routine support on claim management to sites
- Prepare and obtain settlement authority requests to site leadership and Board
- Support safety department with injury management and corporate safety initiatives
- Participate in claim reviews to ensure effective claim management
- Respond to requests for production in WC and other disputes
- Strategize with carrier and defense counsel for litigation and review reserve and settlement authority for approvals
- Responsible for day-to-day handling of auto claims, including tracking of litigated matters in coordination with field leadership, corporate transportation department, Senior Litigation Counsel and outside counsel
- Gather documents and evidence for claims, including responding to discovery requests for litigated matters in coordination with field leadership, corporate transportation department, Senior Litigation Counsel and outside counsel
Skills, Abilities, and Requirements
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in insurance claims management
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; certifications such as AIC or CWCA a plus
- Experience in manufacturing or waste industry preferred but not required
- Strong ability to build productive business relationships and maintain a customer-focused approach
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with carrier portals
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; resourceful and self-starter
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment and be comfortable with an environment of uncertainty.
