Position Overview:
The Operations Supervisor (Municipal) plays a key leadership role in ensuring efficient, safe, and reliable municipal waste and recycling operations. This position oversees daily service delivery, supervises field staff, and acts as the primary link between operations, business development, and customer service. The Supervisor ensures routes are optimized, service standards are met, and continuous improvements are implemented to enhance productivity, safety, and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
Service & Personnel Leadership
- Supervise, schedule, and assign drivers and driver assistants to municipal routes across all service streams (Organics, Recycling, Garbage).
- Provide real-time operational direction, resolving staffing, access, and service issues as they arise.
- Ensure keys, access codes, equipment, and documentation are available for new programs and ongoing operations.
- Monitor daily performance, attendance, and compliance with safety and operational standards.
- Support audits of pre- and post-trip inspections, including spot checks with drivers to ensure accuracy and safety compliance.
Operations & Logistics Oversight
- Oversee route planning, call-ins, rescheduling, and adjustments to maximize efficiency and service reliability.
- Coordinate vehicle maintenance, repairs, rentals, and in-field equipment swaps (including external contractors such as tow trucks or equipment providers).
- Monitor and maintain operational technology (tablets, routing software, and systems), including troubleshooting and follow-up with IT or vendors.
- Track operational KPIs including missed collections, response times, productivity, and service quality, and report trends to management.
New Programs & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with Business Development on the implementation of new municipal programs and service improvements.
- Oversee service changes in operational systems (e.g., Trux), ensuring accurate data, documentation, and communication to field teams.
- Identify inefficiencies and propose process improvements to enhance safety, cost control, and operational effectiveness.
- Lead change management initiatives related to route optimization, technology adoption, and service expansion.
Customer & Field Support
- Act as the primary escalation point for service-related issues from field staff and external municipal contacts.
- Oversee the intake, scheduling, and resolution of missed collections, access issues, bin concerns, and special service requests.
- Ensure timely communication with internal teams and municipal partners regarding service delivery updates and changes.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide coaching, feedback, and support to drivers and operations staff to promote accountability, engagement, and performance.
- Participate in employee engagement initiatives and foster a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Support training initiatives and ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and municipal regulations.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Post-secondary education in Operations, Logistics, Business, or a related field is considered a strong asset.
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in operations, logistics, or field-based service environments; municipal services or waste management experience is an asset.
- Minimum 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience overseeing personnel in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Strong organizational, scheduling, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Excellent communication skills across in-person, phone, email, and digital platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, make real-time decisions, and adapt to changing operational demands.
- Proficiency with operational systems, routing software, and standard office applications.
- Strong understanding of safety compliance, equipment management, and performance monitoring.
