Location: Burlington, MA
Type: Full time permanent employment
Pay: $100-150K DOE
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior HVAC/Mechanical Estimator who can operate independently and work toward a leadership role within our Estimating department. This individual will be responsible for analyzing project documents, assembling accurate estimates, and partnering with engineering, project management, and leadership teams to win work strategically. This is a senior-level position with the potential to grow into an Estimating Manager/Director role.
The ideal candidate is someone who can take full ownership of the estimating process—comfortable with both plan-and-spec work and early-stage design/build budgeting. This role requires strong technical judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to represent ControlAir Systems professionally with customers, vendors, engineers, and GC partners.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Preconstruction
- Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine project scope and required deliverables.
- Prepare detailed mechanical, HVAC, and ductwork estimates—including labor, material, equipment, subcontractors, and general conditions.
- Develop conceptual and design/build budgets based on limited information, using engineering judgment and experience.
- Perform detailed takeoffs for ductwork, piping, equipment selections, and related systems.
- Analyze mechanical systems for constructability, potential value engineering options, and cost savings opportunities.
- Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain pricing and evaluate proposals.
- Generate final estimate packages, including clarifications, assumptions, alternates, and scope narratives.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Work closely with project managers, field supervisors, and engineering partners during preconstruction.
- Support business development and sales by providing early-stage pricing, system options, and budget guidance.
- Help build and refine estimating processes, templates, databases, and best practices.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and oversight as the estimating team grows.
- Represent ControlAir Systems in meetings with clients, engineers, and general contractors.
- Over time, take ownership of the entire estimating function and help train junior estimators or support staff.
Project Transition & Support
- Participate in project handoff meetings with operations teams.
- Assist with system design decisions, equipment selections, and value-engineering options.
- Support PMs during procurement and early project setup to maintain accuracy between estimate and execution.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of mechanical/HVAC estimating experience, preferably in commercial contracting.
- Strong proficiency in ductwork, comfort HVAC piping (VRF), and mechanical system design and installation practices.
- Demonstrated experience with conceptual and design/build estimating.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and engineering documents.
- Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Wenduct, FastEST, Trimble, or equivalent).
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present information clearly to stakeholders.
- Highly organized, detail-driven, and able to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Proven ability to work independently and take ownership of results.
- Leadership experience or desire to grow into a management role.

- Experience with VRF, RTUs, boilers, pumps, controls, and large-scale mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with design/build workflows and customer-facing budgeting.
- Ability to bring structure and best practices to an evolving estimating department.
