The Opportunity
We are looking for a Facilities Manager who combines strong technical judgment with hands-on experience working directly with mechanical and electrical systems. This role is ideal for someone who has spent time in the field and can jump in to diagnose and fix issues as they arise. Backgrounds that would work well include millwright, HVAC technician, industrial mechanic, building systems technician, or a similar trade. Experience with HVAC systems is essential, and exposure to cleanroom environments is an asset.
This person will support and improve Rayleigh's facilities while working closely with our research and production teams. Success in this role calls for technical know how, comfort working with your hands, and a practical approach to problem-solving.
What you'll do
Responsibilities
Facility Development and Maintenance
- Lead and support facility upgrades and improvements that align with evolving research and production needs.
- Maintain stable temperature, humidity, and cleanliness levels across labs and manufacturing spaces with a strong focus on HVAC systems and mechanical controls.
- Perform or oversee hands on troubleshooting and repairs when issues arise.
Regulatory Adherence
- Ensure compliance with building and fire code regulations, particularly regarding the use of solvents that may pose explosion and fire hazards.
- Coordinate necessary audits and inspections.
Infrastructure Optimization and Collaboration with Research Teams:
- Partner with internal teams to design layouts, utilities, and workflows that improve efficiency and support R&D timelines.
- Guide cleanroom builds or upgrades and maintain strict environmental controls.
Vendor, Contractor, and Project Coordination
- Manage external service providers and contractors-supervising maintenance, repairs, and capital projects to ensure timely, cost-effective execution.
- Prepare and manage budgets, negotiate vendor contracts, and monitor project delivery.
Risk Management and Safety
- Proactively identify facility-related risks and implement controls; champion workplace safety and emergency response protocols (e.g. LOTO, PPE, gas/solvent safety).
Process Equipment Support
- Work with teams to ensure process equipment is installed properly with all exhaust, safety, and utility requirements.
- Ensure installations comply with Canadian electrical and mechanical standards, including certification and testing protocols.
What you'll need
Qualifications
- 6 or more years in facility management, building systems, industrial maintenance, or a related field. Experience in manufacturing, tech, or research environments is ideal.
- Background in a hands-on technical trade such as millwright, HVAC, industrial mechanic, building systems technician, or similar.
- Strong HVAC understanding and experience working directly with mechanical and electrical systems.
- Proven problem solver who can assess issues quickly and act in the moment.
- Experience coordinating contractors, budgets, and projects.
- Ability to work with cross-functional teams on facility and infrastructure solutions.
- Familiarity with engineering or project management software.
- A degree or technical diploma in a related field is an asset but equivalent hands on experience will also be considered.
Nice to Have
- Cleanroom construction or maintenance experience.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials requirements and related code compliance.
- Experience leading large facility projects from planning to completion.
