The Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent is responsible for the direct supervision of four or more Caltrans Supervisors in their area of responsibility. Plans activities of assigned highway/landscape maintenance units to determine staffing, equipment, and materials needed to accomplish the work by: working with Supervisors to schedule crews on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis; estimating and authorizing quantities of materials; allotting time needed to accomplish the work; procuring and scheduling equipment; coordinating with other areas to share manpower and equipment and monitoring work in progress and costs. Regularly monitors and reviews Services Requests and Work Orders in IMMS to ensure the proper charging of, including but not limited to, labor, activities, materials, and adequate comments. Monitors and reviews Maintenance Service Requests and Claims to ensure that they are responded to and resolved in a timely manner.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Position located at 2616 North Main Street, Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County.
The Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent is expected to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions, day or night, in normal or emergency conditions, may be exposed to sunburn, loud noise, dust, chemicals, hazardous materials, high‑speed traffic, heights greater than 7 feet, and confined spaces.

- The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
- The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
- The position(s) require(s) a valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Breadth of experience in varied maintenance activities, such as road, special crews, and landscape maintenance in rural and metropolitan locations; technical training in construction, maintenance, or chemical application fields. Class A or B driver license; and familiarity with office automation equipment and computer systems.
