JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Director of Operations or designee, the Environmental Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for advancing the City’s environmental and sustainability initiatives by implementing projects the reduce the City’s carbon footprint, enhance waste diversion efforts and promote sustainable practices across municipal operations and the community. Plays a key role in coordinating citywide climate, energy and waste reduction programs; identifying and managing grant opportunities; and leading public outreach and education efforts in collaboration with internal departments, state agencies and community partners.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assists in budget preparation; identifies and pursues funding sources including state and federal funds, grants and City funding, to expand and support environmental and sustainability initiatives.
- Develops and implements marketing and educational programs that inspire the community to embrace environmental sustainability practices and encourages or promotes changes in the thinking, behavior and practice of individuals through social media, direct interaction, community meetings, school and religious institution outreach.
- Recruit and train volunteers to work as ambassadors for the City’s programs (i.e. farmers markets, recycling locations, city events, etc.)
- Works in collaboration with departments and serves as the team leader in working with City employees to develop sustainability initiatives and assess their cost effectiveness, technical feasibility and implementation methods.
- Coordinates efforts with state and local agency partners on projects and programs to gain additional insight on environmental initiatives.
- Responds to inquiries from staff, community organizations, elected officials and other government agencies.
- Attend community and business meetings, conducts educational outreach in schools to promote citywide recycling and sustainability efforts.
- Coordinates efforts with new building owners (residential and commercial) for waste collection plans and waste reduction.
- Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
- Knowledge of environmental sustainability, energy management, solid waste reduction and climate action principles.
- Ability to research, write and manage environmental grants
- Ability to work collaborate across departments and with diverse community stakeholders.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously with attention to deadlines.
- Proficiency in data analysis, project management and program evaluation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with GIS, data visualization, or sustainability tracking tool. Strong communication, public speaking and interpersonal skills for community engagement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental science, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Public Administration, Urban Planning or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in environmental or sustainability management.
