As a Battery & Energy Storage Engineer within our R&T organization, you will lead the design, development, and testing of cutting-edge energy storage systems for DER and power distribution applications. Your role will focus on developing a technology roadmap for energy storage systems, characterizing and benchmarking battery modules and packs, ensuring they meet size, performance, cost, and specification requirements. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop a technology roadmap for battery and energy storage solutions targeting various markets. By acting as the company-wide subject matter expert, you will play a pivotal role in influencing the future of energy storage within our organization. Additionally, you will establish partnerships with external suppliers and communicate results to key stakeholders, driving innovation and excellence in our energy storage initiatives.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical).
Experience: 8+ years of experience in system design, architecture, testing, or integration of various relevant energy technologies for microgrid, power generation, and energy storage
Strong understanding of renewable energy systems, including solar, wind, power conversion, and energy storage technologies.
Experience with collaboration and application of modeling for system design
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Strong understanding of battery chemistries, materials, and architectures
Ability to develop a technology roadmap and strategy for battery pack technologies for microgrid, EV charging, and data center applications
Experience with collaboration and application of modeling for system design
Ability to establish strategic partnerships with external research institutions and technology suppliers
Product safety experience in relation to risk assessments, safety standards, compliance and regulations including UL 9540A and UL 1973
Strong communication skills to provide clear recommendations and guidelines to stakeholders, technical development teams, and testing teams
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Education: Advanced degree in Engineering (Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical) or equivalent.
Experience:
Advanced degree in Engineering (Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical) or equivalent
Knowledge of battery failure modes, end of life and aging analysis
Hands on experience with testing of battery energy storage packs and development of testing protocols to characterize performance and life at cell and pack level
Experience in performance modeling of batteries in MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape or similar tools
Travel: 5-10%
Work Schedule: This position works between the hours of 7 AM and 5 PM, Monday- Friday. However, work may be performed at any time on any day of the week to meet business needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Characterize, benchmark, and define requirements for design, development of proof-of-concept prototypes, and testing of energy storage and other battery systems
Responsible for characterizing size, performance, cost, and specification requirements for battery modules and packs for energy storage and UPS systems used for DER and power distribution modules
Develop and maintain documentation on component specifications, selection analysis, requirements, and simulation analysis
Develop a technology roadmap for battery and energy storage solutions for microgrid, EV charging, and data center markets
Work closely with systems simulation and FEA/CFD engineers to communicate requirements, performance targets, and boundary conditions for modeling and simulation analysis of battery architectures and BMS
Establish partnerships with external battery cell suppliers to enable modular part reuse across multiple applications
Lead evaluation and benchmarking of new and competitive battery technologies
Prepare and maintain documentation of the battery system architecture
Act as company-wide battery technology subject matter expert
Summarize and communicate results to the key stakeholders
Collaborate with controls software engineers to establish guidelines and performance targets for battery management system (BMS) design
Collaborate with cross-functional teams on power electronics system design, thermal management system design, and packaging/manufacturing design
Collaborate with Verification & Validation team to define DVP&Rs for battery energy storage system testing
