Job Description and Duties
Under the close direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist, the Environmental Scientist will participate as an interdisciplinary team member to identify, inventory, and analyze existing biological resources and their values for use as a data base in the transportation development process; prepares design alternatives for transportation projects; identifies and analyzes impacts of transportation projects on biological resources, develops and recommends mitigation measures to minimize identified impacts upon these resources. This person acts as a staff expert in this field within the California Department of Transportation. This position requires the expertise of a person with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Biological Sciences or be a college graduate with one year experience in Environmental Science. Because the biological studies are subject to review by FHWA and state and federal resource agencies, it is necessary that the District staff Biologist who performs the studies be recognized and a respected expert in the field of biology, so that the adequacy of the studies not be open to question, with resultant delays and increased costs. A drivers license is required.
