- Ensure that all HPSI environmental procedures, rules and regulations are followed and met
- Conduct environmental assessments and audits to ensure compliance with Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and the City of Philadelphia’s Air Management Services (AMS) regulations
- Review and update as needed all current HPSI environmental programs related to air quality, water resources, waste management, and hazardous materials handling
- Monitor and report on environmental compliance issues, preparing necessary documentation and permits
- Coordinate with government agencies, stakeholders, and internal teams to address regulatory concerns and sustainability initiatives
- Investigate and resolve environmental incidents, ensuring proper corrective actions are taken
- Stay current on Pennsylvania and local Philadelphia environmental laws and policies and provide guidance on regulatory updates
- Conduct training sessions for employees on environmental best practices and compliance requirements
- Assist in environmental impact assessments for projects and new developments
- Develop monthly environmental briefs to be shared with the organization and key subcontractor leadership
- Must be willing to serve as a member of the Shipyard Emergency Response Team (ERT). Part of this role is to respond to medical emergencies, chemical spills and other emergencies as part of a coordinated team and provides guidance and expertise in these situations. Training will be provided by the shipyard
- Expected to assist with the company’s Hazardous Waste Management program. As such, the Environmental Specialist will be required to successfully complete annual training to maintain certification in RCRA/DOT Hazardous Waste Management. Duties will include: inspection of hazardous material/hazardous waste storage facilities, coordination of hazardous waste shipments, maintenance of records, participation in program inspections, etc.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field is required
- 3+ years of experience in environmental compliance, preferably with Pennsylvania-specific regulations
- Strong knowledge of PA DEP regulations, EPA guidelines, and City of Philadelphia environmental policies
- Experience with permitting processes and environmental reporting
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with teams and regulatory agencies
- Certification such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or other relevant credentials is a plus

- Ability to work well with others, especially in resolving problem situations
- Ability to express themselves well both orally and in writing
- Must be a motivated self-starter, with the ability to work independently and to carry out assigned tasks with minimal supervision
- Willingness and ability to work as a team member
- Strong computer skills (MS Office)
- Must be comfortable with one’s ability for public speaking
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILTY
This position has no supervision responsibilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Environmental exposures are similar to those found in most heavy industrial settings and may include noise, heat, cold, vibration, dust, fumes, uneven terrain, stairways, climbing ladders and smoke. The work environment includes indoors and outdoors and exposure to inclement weather conditions including cold, rain and hot weather.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The role of HSE Coordinator II – Environmental Specialist is very physically demanding. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Although the position is not directly involved in production, the successful candidate must still possess the physical abilities necessary to work in the industrial environment. Consequently, a range of motion sufficient to perform lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, working at heights, working in confined spaces, extended walking or standing, medically cleared to wear a respirator/SCBA, etc. is required. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is an on-site, full-time, safety-sensitive position. Standard days and hours of work vary by department, days and hours determined by department schedules. Normal work schedule is expected to be Monday – Friday, however, certain situations may arise that requires the Environmental Specialist to be on site during evenings or weekends. May be expected to work holidays dependent upon the schedules of the production departments.
