Position Summary
Public Health internship program provides an opportunity to obtain valuable and applicable work experience in a fast-paced and challenging environment. This position will assist the Public Health Department in meeting compliance with different State and Federal regulations. Although, this position will be mentored throughout by experienced team members; this internship provides an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and exercise your customer service and communication skills while dealing with the City staff and the public.

The intern will perform following essential duties and responsibilities under the supervision of assigned staff:
- Perform vector control activities such as mosquito breeding habitat abatement, surveillance through trapping, larviciding, and investigating complaints.
- Conduct follow-up inspections at public/semi-public swimming pools and respond to complaints.
- Assist with public health outreach efforts such as special events.
- Update and maintain databases and file management.
- Perform other related work as required and assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required, or
- Completion of 20 hours of college course work, or
- College students pursuing a degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, civil engineering, or related degree are encouraged to apply.
Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check, drug/alcohol test and MVR.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Intern must be able to:
- Complete required training for mosquito control work
- Read and follow instruction on chemical labels; make simple mathematical calculations; work independently while performing job duties in the field.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Communicate in a professional and courteous manner.
- Understanding of swimming pool/spa maintenance preferred but not required
- Work with insecticides and reagents.
- Special Requirements:
- Must successfully complete a criminal background check, MVR check, and drug screenings.
- Licenses and Certificates:
- Texas class "C" driver's license required.
- Work Environment:
Lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Stand, bend, lift, climb, crawl, walk on uneven surfaces, and/or stoop, for extended periods of time, to survey, collect and control mosquito samples. Work outdoors. May be subjected to dusts, fumes, heat, chemicals, and odors. Occasional weekend, evening, and on-call work required.
