BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair is a leader in ship repair, modernization, conversion and overhaul. The shipyard has built a trusted partnership with the U.S. Navy and other customers and is also recognized as a leader in safety and environmental stewardship.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Assist Environmental Manager with maintaining operations and compliance with facility requirements and all applicable local, state and federal environmental laws and regulations and with the facility's storm water, air, hazardous waste and other regulatory permits.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct daily inspections related to housekeeping and Best Management Practices (BMPs) implemented for piers, dry docks and the facility.
Conduct weekly, monthly, and other periodic inspections as required by the facility's environmental permits and emergency response plans.
Operate the shipyard's 90-day Hazardous Waste Storage Area. This duty includes weighing and logging in drummed waste delivered to the storage area, keeping the facility clean and orderly, assisting with the loading of waste on trucks for off-site disposal, and other related tasks.
Check out and inspect Satellite Accumulation Areas to NSR shops and subcontractors for temporary storage of hazardous wastes produced during ship repair projects.
Collect water and waste samples.
Administer forms, perform environmental recordkeeping and data entry.
Respond to environmental incidents including spill response, investigate and identify nonconformances.
Assist in pollution and spill prevention at the facility site.
Act as a correspondent for employees and contractors for environmental compliance matters.
Perform similar, incidental and other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and EducationMinimum of one year of experience or education in Hazardous waste disposal or environmental compliance.

Preferred Skills and EducationCompletion of a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response course (HAZWOPER) or Wastewater Treatment operator experience is preferable.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to climb several flights of stairs to top of drydock wingwalls in order to board vessels or perform other inspections. Ability to work outside for extended periods in inclement weather.
Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and use some industrial equipment such as drum handling tools.
Demonstrated ability to use basic word processing and spreadsheet software.
