Description
The Educator Crew Leader is responsible for assisting in making our summer educational programming fun, educational, and aligned to our mission.Specifically, the Crew Leader is to help the Education Manager plan, prepare, and execute the day-to-day schedule to ensure a robust and engaging schedule of chats, encounters and experiences for Zoo Guests. This applicant must be willing to lead and work well with other part-time educators, interns, and other full-time staff. The Educator Crew Leader is responsible for facilitating school programs on zoo grounds, virtually and at schools, as needed. The Educator Crew Leader also helps train and supervise education volunteers and interns at Stone Zoo and participates in occasional special event programs on evenings and weekends.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Leading day and evening (after-hours) education programs and events at the Zoos, local schools, and community centers
- Conduct regular school-based programs around the Greater Boston
- Assist with private programs, including early-childhood learning
- Conduct animal experiences
- Assist the Education Manager with the preparation of schedules, activities, and encounters for scheduled Part-Time Educators. Work closely with volunteers, including facilitating training, supervision and offering appreciation
- Engage zoo guests with interpretative dialog and presentations, and facilitating animal encounters and interactive activities
- Facilitate conversations and presentations for guests to help them learn about Zoo New England's animals, conservation efforts, and mission, and about how guests can help
- Provide excellent customer service and positive interactions with all Zoo guests and employees
- Assume other duties as assigned by the Education Manager
Minimum Job Requirements
- 18 years or older
- Available to work 28 hours per week (7 hours/day) including Saturday and Sunday
- Ability to address audiences of all ages
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to ZNE customers, clients, and employees
- Excellent oral presentation skills
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team
- A strong desire to deliver ZNE’s messages, mission, and goals to our visitors
- Reliable transportation to and from work
- Willingness to spend long periods of time outdoors
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain
- Must pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and/or a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check
- Must agree to abide by all Zoo New England regulations concerning safety and conduct
Preferred Job Requirements
- Previous experience working with children
- Previous exhibit interpretation experience
- Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
- Preferred candidates are usually enrolled in, or have completed, an undergraduate program or studies in zoology, education, biology, or a related field, or they have related life experience
- Current CPR / First Aid certification
Hours, Location, and Term of Appointment
Hours: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, 4 days/week including Saturday and/or Sunday.
Location: Franklin Park and Stone Zoo
Term: April – October
