DescriptionCostain’s multi-discipline engineering and design team deliver design mainly across Costain projects. The design outputs range from studies to detailed design for permanent and temporary works. This team focus on the delivery of sustainable, safe-by-design outputs with a strong constructability ethos.
As a Senior Sustainability Engineer / Carbon Manager you will be responsible for supporting infrastructure project teams to deliver sustainability and carbon management throughout the project lifecycle and delivering PAS2080 Carbon Management systems on projects
Based in Manchester with dynamic working option - there will be visits to construction sites, partners, clients and suppliers as required.

Responsibilities- Producing whole life carbon assessments in accordance with RICS V2 using a variety of carbon assessment tools
- Collaborating effectively to bring together multidisciplinary teams for the integration of sustainability opportunities on all projects.
- Identifying and tracking sustainable opportunities and supporting their implementation through the submission of business cases, technical queries and opportunity reports
- Sharing lessons learnt from projects from successful and missed sustainable opportunities
- Delivering sustainability and carbon awareness training for project teams
- Working alongside Costain’s inhouse engineering team, design partners, suppliers and contractors to embed sustainable best practice
- Exploring innovative and novel methodologies and materials, investigating their applicability and sustainability performance
- Collating and presenting sustainable design case studies for use in tenders & highlighting Costain’s commitment to sustainability
- Monitoring & reviewing project sustainable design elements, ensuring delivery for clients
- Communicating confidently and authoritatively with clients, promoting the sustainable design capability
- Delivering presentations to the Costain team, clients and research partners
- Working with Biodiversity, Natural Capital, Social Value, SHE & Carbon experts to ensure their consideration on projects
- Remaining at the forefront of sustainable practice by supporting research groups, industry networks and academia
Qualifications- Degree qualified and chartered with the ICE, IStructE, IEMA or equivalent industry body
- Experience delivering PAS2080 on infrastructure projects
- Experience creating Whole-life Carbon Assessments using RICS V2 methodology
- Experience of using EPD’s and selecting appropriate carbon factors
- Have a good understanding of how commercial frameworks can be used to implement sustainability opportunities and/ or initiatives.
- Experience working on complex multidiscipline engineering projects with an awareness of different engineering disciplines including civil, structural, electrical, mechanical & process safety
- Have an appreciation of the full project lifecycle including feasibility, detailed design, construction & operation, with experience supporting in more than one life cycle stage
- Effective communication skills – including delivering presentations to both internal and external senior business leaders
- Have awareness of broader sustainability topics including innovation. automated design, Biodiversity, Natural Capital & BREEAM/CEEQUAL certification
- Have UK project experience with a working knowledge of current UK regulations and legislation
- Strong investigative research skills
