Picture yourself stepping into the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens (JZG) for a rewarding 3–4 month contracted (W-2) opportunity. We are actively seeking a dedicated Relief Veterinarian to join our Animal Health team and play a vital role in the care of over 1,400 animal residents.
This temporary position is your chance to apply your five (5) years of experience—including any internship or residency in zoo, exotic, or aquatic animal medicine. In this role, you will provide exceptional medical care to a diverse range of species, from primates and big cats to carnivores, ungulates, reptiles, birds, and aquatic life. Additionally, you will utilize your specialized skills with mammals, such as big cats, primates, small carnivores, and ungulates, to ensure their health and well-being.

Key Responsibilities:
- Provide routine preventive, diagnostic, and emergency medical care for our diverse animal collection.
- Collaborate with Animal Care teams and key stakeholders on health monitoring, wellness exams, disease prevention, and treatments.
- Support emergency care and assist with critical medical interventions.
Do you have:
- A valid DVM and/or Florida State Veterinary License?
- Five (5) years of experience as a zoo veterinarian, including time spent in an internship or residency specializing in zoo, exotic, or aquatic animal medicine?
- Five (5) years of specialized skills with mammals like big cats, primates, small carnivores, and ungulates?
- A current negative TB test?
- Availability to work 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts? We understand the value of your time and commitment and will work with you to ensure our scheduling needs align with yours.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to consistently remain on your feet for 6-8 hours on shift.
- Ability to consistently speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and communications.
- Manual dexterity for standing, reaching, flexibility, and body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting, kneeling, crawling, climbing, jumping, digging and prolonged standing.
- Auditory ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, two-way radio, and face-to-face interactions.
- Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures.
- Ability to transport and move items up to 50 pounds occasionally, without difficulty.
- Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium while performing various jobs.
- Ability to access and navigate each department at the organization on foot, including any construction sites.
- Visual and auditory acuity appropriate for safety and discern differences in documents.
