Position Summary
The Communications & Sustainability Officer is responsible for the production of all digital and printed communication targeted at individual and major donors in support of Covenant House Alaska (CHA). The Communications & Sustainability Officer is also responsible for co-managing the annual Sleep-Out event with the Sustainability officer, which is geared at engaging current and new donors. In addition, this position is responsible for the coordination of public relations and communication through public engagement of local media, social media, and overall communication efforts to inform and educate the community on all aspects and services of CHA.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the Covenant House Mission, philosophy, history and tradition(s) and the underlying values upon which the Agency is founded to the staff, youth and the community we serve.
- Work in collaboration with the Development Team to achieve CHA’s community presence and promotional goals.
- As needed contribute to writing and updating of grant applications
- Update and manage agency social media accounts, i.e., Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
- Update and manage agency website.
- Develop design templates and promotional materials for digital and printed communications.
- Prepare proposals for gift opportunities in response to inquiries and/or cultivation of gifts.
- In collaboration with the Sustainability Officer plan and execute Sleep-Out events,
including Executive Edition and Spring Sleep Out from conception through post event follow-up (creating and monitoring timelines, logistics, budgets, and all communication both internally and externally.
- Collaborate with the Development Team to enhance relationships and create greater fundraising and outreach possibilities
- Produce and distribute digital media surrounding special events.
- Under the direction of the Development Leadership Team provide special event support and actively assist during special events from start to finish.
- Produce and distribute quarterly newsletters, e-newsletters and annual reports that represent the agency and provide insight for donors and community partners regarding agency activities.
- Oversee portfolio of 150 – 200 donors and prospects
- Recruit, Onboard, and Supervise assigned AmeriCorp VISTA
- Participate in overall planning and execution of CHA individual and major gift fundraising.
- Identify ways to increase the cultivation and involvement of donors in corporation visits, meetings, events, and activities as appropriate.
- Participate in department portfolio review process and be a partner in maintain an organized system for donor stewardship by updating constituent records, as appropriate.
- Act as media contact for requests and activities.
- Ensure that information regarding donors and prospective donors learned in the course of cultivation is added to Covenant House’s database.
- Participate and engage in Agency programs and functions as assigned by supervisor.
- Under the direction of Development Team Leadership oversee the use and utilization of Covenant House brand both internally and externally
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree required in communications, commerce, marketing, administration, or other related areas.
Minimum Experience
Five years or more in one or more of the following areas: public relations, fundraising
And special event management. PRSA member designation would be considered an asset.

- Strong ability to relate effectively with staff, youth, and community agencies of varied cultural backgrounds and behaviors;
- Communication skills including organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to speak to and reflect CHA’s principals through independent interaction with donors, news media, and others on and off-site
- Is approachable, builds rapport well and practices attentive and active listening.
- Ability to navigate and become proficient with multiple software products including: Microsoft Office Suite, Raiser’s Edge, DonorDrive, SharePoint, and other software platforms as needed.
- Proficient in design software’s, including Canva, Adobe Suite, WordPress and other graphic design software’s
- Ability to work independently, using good judgment, and common sense
- Ability to make good decisions consistently.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent oral and written skills.
- Basic understanding of adolescent development and behaviors.
- Navigate and manage multiple projects at once, especially during events seasons
- Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed.
- Possess a current state of Alaska Driving License
- Have a clean driving record
- Pass federal, state, and local background investigation
Working Conditions

- Position works in an office setting within the Youth Engagement Center.
- Noise level is mild to moderate, consistent with office and residential environments.
- Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Must have the ability to observe details within close range.
- Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to move within the office to access files and office equipment.
- Consistently operates a computer and related office machinery.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairways within a wide variety of facilities with and possibly without the assistance of an elevator
- Occasionally moves items up to 40 pounds while ascending/descending stairways.
