JOB SUMMARY: This position is located at the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island in the Division of Safety and Emergency Services. The incumbent reports to Supervisory Park Ranger and works with Health Technician EMT's and other staff and conducts safety patrols, risk management activities, education and prevention, provides crowd control, assistance and renders medical aid to visitors. MAJOR DUTIES: Serve as a front-line uniformed representative of the NPS. Provide accurate information and excellent customer service to visitors concerning the NPS area and other surrounding areas of interest. Under medical oversight, provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Coordinate the day-to-day operations of a park level PSAR organization, to include PSAR-related program areas such as patrols, education, technical search and rescue, resource monitoring, emergency medical services, all-hazard incident response, rock climbing, mountaineering, outreach, administration, and/or training. Develop and deliver a variety of search and rescue, emergency medical services, and/or PSAR-related trainings, lectures, impromptu sessions, and public speaking engagements involving various audiences. Serve as a member of an All-Hazard Incident Management Team on incidents that may range in complexity from Type 1-5. Such incidents include but are not limited to emergency medical services incidents, special law enforcement operations, or natural disasters that can occur in any park in the National Park System, on land resources of other Federal land agencies, or in local communities adjacent to Federal lands. Physical Demands: The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as climbing, hiking, and lifting heavy objects. Work may be performed on uneven, steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. EMS and search and rescue involve walking long distances over rough terrain, carrying heavy loads, and using technical rescue equipment. Going without sleep for long periods of time is a common occurrence. Working Conditions: This position requires working in confined spaces and at great height. Search and Rescue and EMS work involves frequent exposure to potentially dangerous situations and/or hazardous environments to include hazardous flight landings and takeoffs, extreme outdoor weather conditions, and/or exposure to communicable diseases.
