The role of the Senior Risk Assessor in the Brownfield Assessment and Development service group is to strengthen and expand MEMS’s services with a focus on technical expertise in the provision of contaminated sites assessment and complex risk assessment projects (human and ecological) to operating and non-operating facilities across western Canada. This is a senior role requiring high quality project execution, with an emphasis on building the skill sets within MEMS that create and foster long-term client relationships, create repeat business and opportunities to expand services within a culture that promotes career growth of junior and intermediate employees within the service group. The position is primarily office-based in a demanding consultative environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure human health and ecological risk assessment practice is current with internal and external policies
- Lead complex risk assessment projects.
- Providing technical support and senior review for complex risk assessment projects;
- Actively lead and delegate continual improvement of process and policies with respect to the risk assessment discipline within the service group; Contributing, implementing and maintaining client business growth plans, creating the conditions that result in long-term repeat
- Actively promoting career development and training opportunities for staff to align individual careers with the opportunities being developed by the corporation;
- Working collaboratively with key staff, contractors and stakeholders.
- Providing technical support as needed to other MEMS’ disciplines including hydrogeology, site assessment and remediation.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum ten (10) years of directly related experience as an Environmental Risk Assessment professional, preferably in a consulting environment.
- Have a detailed understanding of site-specific risk assessment procedures and of the basis for and models underlying risk based environmental guidelines.
- A track record of completing site-specific risk assessments and developing appropriate risk based remedial objectives for sites of intermediate to significant complexity with limited supervision is essential.
- Experience successfully managing and maintaining client relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to build succinct, clear and appropriate conceptual site models from diverse datasets of previous investigations and mentor others in this regard. Advanced understanding of the Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 guideline documents and/or equivalent documents from other jurisdictions is required.
- Advanced knowledge of all the key skills for risk assessment including hydrogeology, soil science, environmental chemistry, contaminant transport, modelling, human health and ecological toxicity is expected.
- Advanced experience developing risk-based site management strategies will be an asset, and
- Experience with contaminant transport modelling in groundwater, unsaturated soil moisture, soil vapour or other environmental media is an asset.
- Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization is required.
- Must be able to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, this may include pre-access drug, alcohol and fitness testing, and
- Possess a valid, non-GDL Class 5 Drivers license.
Other Knowledge and Skills:
- Advanced knowledge and experience with current provincial and federal legislation and familiarity with the environmental site-specific risk assessment process.
- Advanced understanding and the ability to effectively apply the Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 guideline documents and/or equivalent documents from other Canadian jurisdictions as required.
- Strong understanding of the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry, oil sands industry and commercial/industrial/brownfields environmental industry.
- Understanding of outcome-based approaches and willingness to apply pragmatic “outside the box” approaches.
- Excellent ability to provide technical expertise for challenging projects.
- Strong Project Management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Strong writing skills and technical competency.
- Knowledge of numerical modeling.
- Good communications and organizational skills.
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary setting.
- Good mentoring skills; and
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
Working Conditions:
- Office environment that requires sitting for extended periods of time.
- Prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens.
- Sometimes requires long hours of work.
- Occasional interruptions outside work hours and travel to other offices are required, and
- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
