Environmental Health Specialist -Food, lodging, and Institutional Sanitation Program
The Wilson County Health Department has an anticipated vacancy for a fully qualified Environmental Health Specialist. Consideration will also be given to applicants who are eligible for hire as an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee (intern).

This is a full- time, benefits eligible position with the Wilson County Government.

HOURS: The regular work hours are from 8:00am to 5:00 pm, five days a week (Monday through Friday). Night, evening, and weekend work is performed as needed or required for environmental health related emergencies, investigations, inspections, or other activities.

Description of Work

This position is responsible for the enforcement of the various applicable state laws and rules primarily in the Food, Lodging, and Institutional Sanitation Program. Inspections are performed on establishments as required by applicable laws and rules. These establishments include restaurants, food stands, meat markets, confinement facilities, nursing homes, lodging facilities, summer camps, limited food service establishments, hospital, and others as assigned. These inspections involve visual observation and physical inspection of the conditions of the establishment to determine compliance with the applicable laws and rules. Once the inspection is complete, all violations are documented on the inspection sheets. Points are deducted on the inspection form so that a grade, demerit score, or classification is determined.

The ideal candidates will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

- Working knowledge of food sanitation, food-borne diseases, communicable diseases, protection of water supplies, solid waste management, and institutional sanitation
- Working knowledge of inspection methods and investigation techniques as applied in environmental health
- Working knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures as well as a complete understanding of the concepts of public health law
- Ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations, records, and reports
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public
- Ability to develop and express ideas and opinions concisely, comprehensively, and clearly in oral and written form
- Ability to independently plan and schedule work activities
- Ability to apply environmental health knowledge and techniques in the investigation of environmental health problems
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing public health laws and regulations
- Ability to communicate with the public effectively and to speak to large groups of people in an educational setting
-This position will focus primarily on food and lodging but will also support other areas as needed
-Other duties as assigned

It is required by the North Carolina State Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners that 15 hours of continuing education be met each year. This must be achieved by attendance to various workshops, meetings, seminars, etc.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited baccalaureate or postgraduate degree program with a minimum of 30 semester hours or its equivalent in the physical or biological sciences; or a graduation from a baccalaureate or postgraduate degree program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC).

License or Certification Required
Must be eligible to meet the requirements for registration or license as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.

Trainee Appointment
Appointee must be eligible for registration and apply for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist Intern within 60 days of employment. Employee may remain registered as a Environmental Health Specialist Intern until registration as an Environmental Health Specialist or up to three years, whichever comes first.
