JOB SUMMARY: This position performs simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. MAJOR DUTIES: Incumbent is a part of the park's maintenance team and will be responsible for assisting skilled craftsperson in building maintenance and repairs; with carpentry, plumbing, roofing and panting operation in the park. This may include but not limited to cutting wood, nailing fence and boardwalk boards, glazing window; exercising valves, clearing clog drains; shingle replacement and painting both interior and exterior surfaces. Work may be form ladders, scaffolding and uneven surfaces. Incumbent will also perform grounds maintenance activities such as mowing/trimming grass, trees and shrubs; load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, and dollies; pick up trash; dig ditches and trenches; push, move, lift and carry loads such as stones, bags of cement and concrete forms - some weighing up to 100 lbs.; general custodial and material handling safely uses equipment and tools such as a mortar mixer, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, power and hand tools, shovels and wheelbarrows. Work will be conducted outside with temperatures to over 100 degrees in windy, dry conditions and over uneven terrain and surfaces. This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Qualification requirements must be met for those applications submitted by the first cut-off date. Fort Larned NHS is located six miles west of Larned, Kansas. Government housing is not available; however, houses and apartments are available to rent or to own in the nearby area. Public transportation is not available. Shopping, schools and a hospital are all available in town. This is a rural area, 2 ½ hours from Wichita. Elevation is 2,036 feet and the average rainfall is 23 inches. Summer temperatures sometimes exceed 100 degrees and winter temperatures of 20 degrees or lower are not uncommon.
