JOB SUMMARY: These positions are located in North Cascades National Park, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for North Cascades National Park is April-May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2025. MAJOR DUTIES: GS-0025-05: Patrol climbing approaches and technical climbing routes, as well as trailed areas and rugged off-trail travel, by foot and in a wide range of weather conditions. Make educational and safety contacts with visitors, especially mountaineering parties. Initial response and serves on a team for Search and Rescue and emergency response in the wilderness and in technical terrain. Perform some campsite maintenance, trail work, and other tasks relating to wilderness management, including maintenance of composting toilets in climbing areas. Backcountry patrols vary in length from 1 to 10 days per pay period, but average 3-6. The remainder of the time is spent staffing a wilderness information center, SAR and gear cache maintenance, conducting training, and office project work. GS-0025-07: This is a team leader mountaineering ranger position. You are expected to be skilled and experienced to: Provide leadership and guidance to other employees and/or volunteer partners in Search and Rescue operations. Lead climbing and mountaineering patrols. Assist the supervisor in leading and mentoring new rangers. May be responsible for the direction and coordination of volunteers, Student Conservation Association employees, interns, and community work crews doing park projects.
