JOB SUMMARY:

This position provides engineering expertise to support the development, analysis, evaluation, measurement, and verification (EM&V) of clean energy solutions and Distributed Energy Resources which are part of the Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA), Non-Pipes Alternatives (NPA), and Utility Thermal Energy Network (UTEN) portfolios at Avangrid’s New York operating companies including NYSEG and RG&E.
This position will work in New York to lead the success of existing and future utility programs and their resulting benefits. The job requires being able to interpret and apply company, industry, local, state, and national standards and ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. It is also required that the candidate will ensure safe and efficient operation of the project measures and resolve technical issues affecting the project and distribution system.
MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Scope of work - range of responsibilities):
- Lead the ongoing engineering and technical support of the NWA and NPA group through:
- Working closely with the Gas and Electric Planning teams to investigate, configure scenarios, and run models that can help to identify NWA/NPA technologies to address system needs.
- Supporting the Lead Analyst with NWA/NPA procurement activities which may include:
- RFP Development
- Developer Q&A
- Developer Selection
- Other activities
- Provide other technical and business case support to NWA and Distribution Planning group to facilitate incorporation of NWA/NPA/UTEN projects within Integrated System Planning (ISP) model.
- Perform engineering analyses of distribution system needs and technical review of NWA proposals. Complete distribution system reliability studies, contingency plans, review capital budget project proposals, prepare net present value economic analyses and or Benefit Cost Analysis (BCA) modeling, determine correction of circuit electrical operating deficiencies, etc. Conduct capacity analyses of key substation equipment.
- Analyze the impact of developer-interconnected distributed generation for projects. Recommend necessary system improvement and/or construction projects associated with interconnecting NWA DER on the distribution system and provide all necessary documents for those projects including cost projection and analysis for required distribution system improvements associated with NWA projects.
- Lead the development of process improvements for identifying NWA/NPA as well as the suitability screening process for NWA/NPA programs.
- Maintain and update the BCA handbooks and spreadsheets to calculate benefits for NWA/NPA projects.
Skills and Requirements
- BS or BT degree in Electrical Engineering or related field is required. Additional consideration is given to applicants with Advanced Degrees or Certifications (e.g. MSEE, PE, etc.)
- 5+ years of experience (industry related)
- Thorough knowledge of electric distribution system design and modeling
- Thorough knowledge of gas distribution system design and modeling
- Demonstrated understanding of Distributed Energy Resource planning and system impact
- Preference given to previous experience working with and across functional departments including electric engineering, gas engineering, operations, energy control center, etc.
- Experience supporting the implementation of complex initiatives.
- Highly developed quantitative skills as demonstrated with complex modeling; preference given to previous benefit/cost modeling experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of utility operations and positive stakeholder interactions, with experience working with and across functional departments (Projects, Regulatory, Investment Plan, Distribution & Transmission Planning, others).
- Experience in achieving project results in high pressure and high-profile assignments is required.
- Interest in sustainability and emergent utility technologies.
- Desire to support advancement of New York’s clean energy & climate goals.
