JOB SUMMARY:
The Protection & Relaying Design group is a team within AVANGRID Protection and Control responsible for developing protection relay settings in safe, timely and cost-effective manner for electric transmission and substation Capital projects at AVANGRID and its subsidiaries: CMP (Central Maine Power), NYSEG (New York State Electric & Gas), Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E), The United Illuminating Company (UI). AVANGRID’s electric delivery system has approximately 9,000 miles of transmission lines and 1,000 substations.
MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Scope of work - range of responsibilities):
- Responsible for managing internal engineers and external contractors. Reports to Manager of Protection & Relaying.
- The supervisor will act as an advisor to upper management and an external representative to AVANGRID. The supervisor is responsible for giving presentations to upper management and large internal audiences, as necessary.
- This role requires coordination with other departments, vendors, and consultants to complete projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Process Management, Continuous Process Improvement, Project Management, Budgeting, generating Purchase Orders, reviewing Invoices, and managing contracted engineering service agreements.
- Oversee planning, estimating, and engineering design execution in support of the Capital program and applicable NERC Compliance programs at Avangrid.
- Ensure all protection system designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards (NERC, NPCC, NYISO, ISO-NE, etc.).
- Train, mentor, and coach in the technical and professional development of engineers and cross-department employees.
- Represent the company on regional and national committees.
Education & Experience Required:
- 8 years of experience in Engineering of which 6 years of experience in Protection & Control.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering or MBA preferred.
- Professional Engineering License preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of power system analysis and fundamentals of equipment protection required.
- Prior supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of national and international standards, regulations, and NERC, NPCC, and ISO compliance requirements associated with power system protection.
Skills/Abilities:
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Strong Electrical Design Experience.
- Proficiency and fluency in power system protection theory, application, standards, design, test, commissioning, and analysis.
- Ability to work with Microsoft applications like Word, Excel, PowerBI, etc.
