The Role
The Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHS&S) Senior Manager is a strategic and operational leader for Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability programs at Moderna’s MTC campus in Norwood. Reporting to the Head of EHS - MTC, this role is responsible for driving campus-wide environmental programs (e.g., air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous and regulated waste, SPCC compliance) and providing expertise across all EHS domains for operational areas. This role will lead delivery of EHS requirements for the Technical Development function, collaborate with other site EHS team members, and serve as a subject matter expert for EHS compliance and program execution.
Here’s What You’ll Do
Develop and execute the EHS&S strategic plan for the Norwood MTC campus, ensuring alignment with Moderna’s corporate EHS strategy and business objectives.
Provide oversight and governance of site-level EHS programs, with a focus on environmental domains such as air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous and regulated waste, and SPCC compliance.
Support the implementation of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems, ensuring certification and alignment with global standards.
Act as a strategic partner to the Technical Development function, integrating EHS considerations into lab operations, project planning, and high-risk activities.
Serve as a trusted EHS advisor to senior leadership and cross-functional teams, providing guidance on complex risk management and regulatory compliance matters.
Collaborate with Facilities & Engineering, Technical Development, Capital Projects, and Manufacturing Operations to integrate EHS into site operations and project planning.
Support and collaborate with other site EHS team members to address shared goals and operational needs, fostering teamwork and alignment.
Lead the development and deployment of innovative EHS solutions, leveraging data analytics to identify trends and drive data-informed decision-making.
Oversee the management of change (MOC) process for operational and infrastructure changes, ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, sustainability, and regulatory standards.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the EHS domain, identifying and mitigating systemic risks through strategic program enhancements.
Lead the development and deployment of innovative EHS solutions, leveraging data analytics to identify trends and drive data-informed decision-making.
Own and manage campus environmental programs, including air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous and regulated waste, and SPCC compliance.
Develop and maintain site-specific environmental management plans, ensuring timely reporting, permitting, and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Partner with corporate sustainability teams to align environmental programs with Moderna’s broader sustainability objectives.
Lead investigations into complex environmental and safety incidents, utilizing root cause analysis methodologies to develop and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
Serve as a key contact for incident resolution, ensuring timely response and comprehensive documentation.
Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)
A Bachelor’s Degree in environmental health and safety, environmental engineering, or other related discipline
10+ years of progressive EHS experience, with expertise in environmental programs such as air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, and hazardous waste management.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)
Proven experience supporting Technical Development or R&D environments, with the ability to navigate complex lab operations and safety requirements.
Demonstrated success implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and senior leadership in a collaborative and supportive capacity.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex EHS concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
Skilled at engaging with regulatory authorities, auditors, and other external stakeholders.
Strong technical knowledge of environmental compliance programs, including SPCC, hazardous waste management, and air emissions compliance.
Proficiency in developing and implementing SOPs, management plans, and training programs.
Ability to leverage data and analytics to inform decision-making and program improvements.
Strategic thinker with a results-oriented approach and exceptional problem-solving skills.
Adaptable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with evolving priorities.
