The project\:
£2bn+ construction programme based in Reading area to deliver new manufacturing capability including multiple projects. The client’s ambition is to develop a best-in-class new sustainable facility, delivering maximum environmental and social benefits. Due to the strict security requirements, candidates must be a UK National and will need to progress through security clearance.

Integrated into the programme partner team, alongside design, equipment and construction partners, the successful candidate will lead environment/sustainability workstreams, providing expertise for a range of disciplines, and will be responsible for delivery of the programme-wide sustainability outcomes. This will include delivery of sustainability processes and procedures as well as driving high standards of contractor environmental performance. The successful candidate will join the existing responsible business team in the UK and deliver client-facing consultancy services including the advisory, management and co-ordination of various climate change, sustainability and/or social value related activities on projects and/or programmes. The role will also support work winning, and Mace’s wider corporate ambitions to reduce client carbon emissions by 10 million tonnes, generate £700m value to society, and deliver 500 hectares of new biodiversity net gain by 2026.
You’ll be responsible for:

Support the delivery and management of the environmental management system.
-
Lead on Carbon for the programme partner team producing carbon plans, baselining and reporting.

Support the collation and reporting of project KPIs.
-
Create environmental engagement campaigns throughout the year including carbon, circular economy and biodiversity.

Champion sustainability best practices and best-in-class outcomes.

Lead the development of environmental behaviour and culture with the site teams and supply chain partners.
-
Drive environmental and sustainability performance with tier one contractors, drawing on experience in the supply chain to deliver leading/best practices.
-
Ensure that project/programme/sustainability theme best practices are promoted to enable continuous improvement in environmental and sustainability performance.

Help instigate and oversee a programme of regular environmental inspections and implement the environmental performance measurement, review and reporting requirements.

Co-operate with auditors during environmental audits and implement corrective actions resulting from any non-conformances.

Lead the development of client climate change, sustainability and/or social value strategies on individual projects, including agreeing project outcomes and ensuring their delivery by the project team.

Be a technical expert and promote innovation in a particular area of sustainability, such as waste, energy/carbon, water, responsible sourcing of materials, sustainable buildings, etc.

At the same time, this person should be a pro-active generalist, able to cover all key issues of sustainability with all relevant stakeholders.

Support work winning through bid support, innovation, client liaison, and external profile-raising of Mace/Mace services.

Support the drive for Mace to be a leader in climate change and sustainability.
You’ll need to have:
-
Experience of leading/driving the sustainability agenda and delivering successful outcomes.
-
Experience (preferably client side) managing environmental issues on a large construction project (or similar), to include on-site construction experience, best practice and innovative delivery and expectations.
-
Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently and be pro-active.
-
Professional qualities including accuracy, tenacity, results-oriented, the ability to work well within a team.
-
Excellent communication/interpersonal skills with client, team and external stakeholders – ability to communicate technical content succinctly with non-technical audiences.
-
Experience of developing and leading strong relationships with regulators and other public bodies, experience of delivery of regulatory commitments would be an advantage.

Qualified to degree level in a related discipline.

Expertise in one or more sustainability topics (waste, water, energy, carbon, responsible sourcing, building design, biodiversity, etc).

Be able to translate technical topics into laypersons language and articulate the value of sustainability.
-
Be able to represent Mace at relevant forums and through presentations to clients and working groups.

Champion sustainability and be a leader, encouraging behavioural change throughout the business.

Developing innovation and best practice, including clearly communicating these to the wider business and our clients.

Bid support – support work winning/bidding with strong business acumen.

Establish and maintain positive working relationships with client and stakeholders including design team members, contractors, sub-contractors, and regulators.

Any other ad hoc duties as required.
