TNA is seeking an Environmental Science or Engineering Co-op Student for the Environmental Health Safety & Security (EHSS) department. Our vision for this position is to support the mission of the EHSS department in its environmental objectives to ensure compliance with all current and future Federal, State, and local environmental regulations and permit requirements as well as the development of its sustainability initiatives.
Throughout the co-op's tenure, he or she will gain a good understanding of the entire tire manufacturing process, air quality monitoring & permit requirements, wastewater treatment and permit requirements, waste reduction strategies as well as regulatory requirements applicable to the tire & rubber manufacturing industry relating to air monitoring and controls, wastewater controls, stormwater pollution control, liquid, and solid waste collection, wastewater treatment, and disposal and recycling as well as decarbonization projects.
He or she will apply knowledge of fundamental design, operations, and construction related to the treatment of air pollution control systems and wastewater pre-treatment facilities, as well as implementation of Environmental Management System (EMS) standards such as the ISO 14001 as well as Stormwater and Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasure (SPCC) plans.
He or she will learn to apply environmental & science principles to design, interpret, evaluate, and make recommendations on various air pollution control technologies, solid waste, wastewater operations, and recycling to avoid potential violations of air quality, stormwater, wastewater, and solid waste.
This opportunity is for the Spring and Summer 2025 school semester.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at a sophomore or junior level in pursuit of an Environmental major (preferably Environmental Science or Chemical Engineering) at a four-year, accredited university or college, and be in pursuit of a cooperative education certification through their school's program. Qualifications
- Actively enrolled in an accredited Environmental Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geologic Engineering, or related Undergraduate program
- Competencies include initiative, dependability, commitment, and accountability, which require minimum supervision and strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint
- Personal protective equipment provided or required.
- Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily.
Responsibilities
- Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
- Learn basic principles of Environmental Engineering
- Support the development of sustainability initiatives, including cost reduction programs for all compliance systems put in place to support permit requirements.
- Assist with the implementation of Toyo Tire’s Stormwater and Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, including conducting stormwater & SPCC inspections.
- Assist with the implementation of all the items of Toyo Tire’s Environmental compliance calendar.
- Assist with the implementation of ISO 14001 standard including data collection, analysis and taking stock of all its programs and processes.
- Assist in the automation of data collection processes for the following processes, including but not limited to air quality monitoring process, Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) annual reporting, Tier II annual reporting, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) approval process as well as the chemical data reporting (CDR) under Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
- Assist with the renewal or modification of all permit requirements, including but not limited to air permit & wastewater permits.
- Assist with project research and preliminary design calculations and analysis for all sustainability initiatives/programs/processes.
- Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates for all sustainability initiatives/programs/processes.
- Support the EHSS department in its safety and health programs and processes as needed.
- Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
- Complete training on assigned tasks
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to Toyo Tire’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
