Position Summary:
The Environmental Officer is responsible for overseeing the company’s environmental policies, procedures and systems. This individual also provides shipboard expertise to Shoreside Marine Operations and assist in the development of these policies and procedures. Also serves as the shipboard subject matter expert on environmental regulations.
The Environmental Officer’s primary duty is to ensure that the ship is in compliance with applicable local, state, regional, federal, port state, flag state and international environmental laws and regulations, as well as, applicable Company policies.
The Environmental Officer also provides direct environmental compliance assistance and advice to the Chief Engineer. For other matters such as safety and public health, sanitation & infection control, the Environmental Officer supports the Staff Captain. Due to the nature of the role, the Environmental Officer interfaces with all departments, employees and all areas of the ship. Given the scope of this role, the Environmental Officer has a unique responsibility for reporting any concerns or regulatory/LVMS violations to the HSSEQ Manager, Head of Marine Operations; if/when these are not properly addressed by the ship’s management or as directed by Company policy.
The Environmental Officer position is supported by Marine Operations. The DPA provides technical support and oversight, as needed, on environmental compliance matters.
The Environmental Officer together with the support of the Staff Captain, Hotel Director & the Food and Beverage Manager keep the vessel in compliance in terms of Public Health (PH); oversees the implementation of shipboard PH procedures of each region and/or to comply local requirements, the facilities and equipment’s hygiene, sanitation & maintenance issues to ensure fulfillment with applicable PH standards. Reviews chemical and microbiological parameters within on board marine sanitation device, potable water (PW) along with the recreational water facilities (RWFs) to ensure obey with applicable public health standards, working with both the Hotel and Technical Departments onboard to implement corrective actions and/or close the facilities when values are out of range. Escort & assist PH internal and external inspectors during inspections. Reviews all internal and external inspection reports to identify trends and avoid repeat deficiencies.
Support the Staff Captain and the Medical department during an outbreak response (OPRP) ensuring to follow all protocols and guidance dictated on the companies SMS.

Qualifications (Education, Work Experience, Skills and Abilities):
- Minimum Bachelor’s of Science degree and/or Marine Transportation degree/license is required (Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering)
- Environmental Management/Science or Environmental Engineering Degrees, especially those with a Marine emphasis, preferred
- Demonstrated environmental background/experience within the last 5 years strongly preferred
- Previous experience with emergency response including command and control preferred
- Valid training certificates in accordance with SOLAS regulations and/or STCW 2010 from approved training facility including:
- STCW Basic Safety Training
- STCW Advanced Shipboard Firefighting
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and ability to work in multicultural environment
- Public speaking and/or teaching/training experience required
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of environmentally related engineering equipment and systems
- Basic knowledge of marine regulations/standards including ISM, MARPOL, NPDES and ISO 14001
- Effectively communicates a solid understanding of current maritime environmental issues and topics
- Understands shipboard Marine culture and chain of command
- Highly organized with ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines

Language Requirements:

- All shipboard employees must be able to communicate in the English language in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.
Physical Requirements:
- All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. The employee must have the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
