Salary Range: $97,100 - $143,600

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ideal candidate will have general environmental law expertise. The position will involve:
- Providing legal advice to internal Environment & Sustainability clients, including Remediation, Operations, Engineering, Permitting and various railroad operations clients.
- Assess and advise on compliance for various rail facilities and work with the team to address enforcement issues.
- Reviewing, drafting and leading the negotiation of consent decrees with a variety of Federal and State Agencies.
- Monitor and track legal and regulatory developments.
- Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating environmental provisions in documents associated with real estate transactions and sourcing agreements.
- Proactively identifying risk to the company and finding ways to minimize the risk.
- Researching and resolving general environmental matters affecting the company.
- Handling environmental litigation, including choosing appropriate outside counsel, overseeing their work, and handling cases in-house when appropriate.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited Law School with strong academic record.
- Admitted to practice and in good standing in at least one state. Formal Court appearances are not anticipated.
- 5 plus years of experience focused on general environmental legal matters, with general knowledge of the CAA, NEPA, CERCLA, RCRA, and the CWA.
- Excellent legal analytical, research, verbal and written communication and advocacy skills.
- Commitment to working as a team.
- Able to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization.
- Knowledge of Lexis research system and web-based legal research tools, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to handle multiple complex and challenging assignments and projects in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and diplomatically with internal and external clients as well as Federal, State, and local entities.
- Commitment to Environmental compliance and excellence.
- Ability to travel approximately 25% of the time and/or based on business need.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in construction permitting (CWA §§ 401 and 402, NHPA § 106).
- Experience or knowledge of HazMat issues and regulatory agency oversight of HazMat response.
- Experience in Federal Indian Law and the intersections between Indian Laws and Environmental Laws.
