Nuclear Engineer III or Senior Nuclear Engineer – Electrical Design, Brunswick Nuclear Plant

Summary
Duke Energy is seeking an Electrical Engineer III or a Senior Electrical Engineer for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC. The nuclear industry provides power generation with no emissions and is vital to the clean energy transformation. As such, this position provides an exciting opportunity to leverage new technology.
The selected individual will perform engineering work for electrical and Instrumentation and Control (I&C) projects within the design engineering organization. Responsibilities will include design package development for plant modifications, developing conceptual designs and specifications for bidding purposes, evaluating alternatives, technical support during implementation, coordination of design efforts with selected vendors and conducting design package reviews. A working knowledge or familiarity of cyber security regulations as mandated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is required as digital components need to be cyber security compliant. Selected candidate will be required to qualify in the necessary duty areas to act independently as a Responsible Engineer for modifications within Duke Energy with past qualifications and product demonstration from other utilities as an acceptable alternative.
Current qualification at a nuclear utility as a Modification Engineer, Calculation Preparer, or Design Verifier with knowledge of Passport or Consolidated Asset Suite for design and work order development is highly desirable. Experience in Operations is considered a desirable trait as well. Individual will be required to obtain qualifications for a Modification Engineer prior to working independently. Selected individual will function as the Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned projects and in a support capacity on other project teams. Lastly, the individual will be expected to exhibit sound technical judgment and guidance to the project team.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Nuclear Engineer III
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
- 4-6 years of engineering experience.
Senior Nuclear Engineer
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Registration/Licensure as a Professional Engineer
- Experience in digital hardware modifications
- Engineering experience at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant
- Working knowledge of digital upgrade specific licensing requirements and current 10CFR73.54 Cyber Security Requirements
- Experience developing electrical component and/or system modification test plans.
- Experience in the 10CFR50.59 with respect to designing modifications to a nuclear facility.
- Strong oral and written communication skills within a professional environment
- Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations to a project team.
- Must be able to work in a team environment.
- Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
Specific Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
- In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
- Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
- Occasional overnight travel.

- Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
