Ford and SK On are investing billions in Kentucky and Tennessee including building three state-of-the-art battery manufacturing facilities between the two campuses at BlueOval City in Tennessee and BlueOval SK Battery Park in Kentucky. These brand-new advanced manufacturing facilities will use Ford’s 100-years of automobile manufacturing expertise and SK On’s 30+ years of electric vehicle battery expertise to become the world’s best battery manufacturer.
The Tool & Die Engineer at BlueOval SK – BlueOval SK in Glendale, Kentucky will have a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a key member of the start-up team, launching the facility from the ground up.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Lead the development of stamping processes and progressive die strip layouts for new model parts optimized for cost and quality on a timely basis supported with other company activities to achieve company objectives.
- Provide knowledgeable liaison of progressive die part feasibility, strip layout development, die design, construction, tryout and buyoff for new model progressive stampings.
- Lead the creation of draw die CAD Developments and Construction Release Files for new model stampings.
- Lead the development of Process Failure Modes Effects Analysis (PFMEA's) for new model stampings.
- Update and maintain existing die process information for the inclusion of improvements, service requirements and carryover modified part releases required for new model usage.
- Participate in and initiate cost requests for new model costing, evaluation of engineering proposals.
- Primary engineering support to N/C, machining, construction, tryout and buyoff of dies.
- Support Stamping Feasibility and Stamping Die Process engineering with die design investigations and deliver design solutions and product/process requirements to proposed Die Design Architecture.
- Develop detailed 3D Solid CAD models to define all Stamping Die engineering intent (Press information, automation, part load/unload, gripper locations, pad travel, CAM travel, typical design sections etc.)
- Design draw, trim/pierce & flange (including CAMs) for current model programs.
- Check vendor designs for compliance with Ford requirements and construction/production deliverables using Virtual Verification tools.
- Develop Generic Die Architecture models based on PDPD process and target facility.
- Review customer feedback and develop permanent corrective actions to improve die design quality.
- Work with Customers to improve process and die design deliverables in support of company quality/cost/timing objectives.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Associate Degree or equivalent experience in Drafting/Design or Tool & Die Apprenticeship.
Experience:
- 5+ yrs of related experience. Must have 2 years minimum experience in at least one of the following stamping areas:
- Die Processing, Progressive Dies
- CAD Draw Development
- Die Design Die Construction, and/or Tryout.
- Ability to support any shift in a 7-day work pattern
- CAD skills required, CATIA V5 preferred.
- Proficient in reading stamping die designs, both manual and CAD.
- PFMEA proficiency required.
- MS Office proficiency required. (.XLS, .DOC, .PPT, and Outlook)
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Lean Manufacturing experience
- Successful candidate must be able to demonstrate leadership behaviors consisting of outstanding interpersonal, teambuilding, and communication skills
- Candidate must be flexible to significant travel during initial plant start-up phase
- Minimum 8 years Die Design experience for large automotive sheet metal panels.
- Minimum 5 years 3D solid die design experience in one of the following CAD systems: I-DEAS, UniGraphics, Catia.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience Die Design & Construction standards (WDX).
- Experience in the use of Virtual verification tools such as Vis-Mock-Up, Smirt to check for die interference, automation clearance, Machining clearance, etc.
- Familiar with Patterns, NC Machining and Die Construction Practices.
Preferred Requirements:
- Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering degrees preferred
- Understanding of sheet metal FLD Reports and general sheet metal forming methods preferred.
