Principal Engineer
Location: Fremont, California
Job Summary:
This position is responsible for servicing battery packs for client’s customer in California and running the Battery Pack Repair Facility while interfacing with the customer as required to manage logistics and communicate engineering issues, next steps and resolutions.
This role will be responsible for 0-5 direct reports while providing Engineering Leadership and supporting facilities and operations on a daily basis at the Repair Facility.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Lead the Engineers and Technicians in Fremont, California workshop to ensure all root cause, testing, repair, and rebuild of battery packs is done per established repair, build and safety procedures
- Be prepared to travel to support pack-to-vehicle build issues, and vehicle and rig testing.
- Support issue identification with battery packs delivered to the customer – suspect packs may be delivered to Facility, or may be at Customer sites, installed into vehicles or test rigs.
- Work with UK-based company engineers to resolve battery pack issues reported by the customer.
- Raise and track JIRA tickets related to issues with customer’s battery packs.
- Complete pack End of Line Testing after builds, repairs, and upgrades to battery packs.
- Prepare and present reports for Company and Customer audiences.
- Lead / support technical and project reviews with company leadership and the customer, as required.
- Regularly communicate Lessons Learned to the broader Battery Engineering Team.
- Maintain positive relationships with customers, suppliers, coworkers, and global company departments.
- Assist with hazard analysis, risk management and DFMEA for components and systems as required.
- Health and Safety Lead for the Facility
- Understand and work to all relevant Company, Customer, Industry and Legislative standards.
- Manage all Facilities and Operations activities for the facility, as required to maintain a positive workspace
- Keep a safe, well-maintained, clean, secure facility within established budget
- Collaborate with Company, the landlord, and local authorities as Facility point person.
- Maintain and report out a status summary of key facility performance metrics, including safety and throughput
Qualifications, skills and experience required:
- 7+ years’ experience and proven track record in battery pack development and integration
- Degree in relevant engineering discipline (bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, aerospace, or other area of engineering)
- Good understanding of on-vehicle networks
- Understand HV architecture, and system and harness diagrams, to be used during fault diagnosis.
- The ability to work flexibly to meet strict deadlines.
- Working knowledge of Vector tools including CANalyzer, CANape and CANoe
Preferred:
- 10+ years’ hands-on experience working on Electric Vehicles – HV charging, HV battery and HV powertrain systems within the automotive, mobility or motor sports industries.
- Excellent people management soft skills and experience
- Experience with Requirements Capture Tools, such as Siemens Polarion or IBM Rational Doors
- Understanding of functional Safety and ISO26262
- Familiarity with HV electrical test equipment and software tools
